One chick

Go get them and they will all be friends

That would be great, I'm in Arlington. [email protected] if you'll be anywhere nearby. I have a friend with a farm in NH, but he's not sure they'd be OK with the chicks he has as they are much older.

I was actually more worried about the guinea pigs, and the chick pecking them - I don't how they could hurt the chick, but it's probably a bad idea any way, and I wouldn't feel comfortable leaving them together unsupervised so I'd spend all my time watching even if they did get a long

I would not put it with the guinea pigs. While you are in the process of getting it to friends, try filling a sock with flax seed and warming it in the microwave.

Thanks, I didn't have flax seed but did have brown rice, so I'm trying that. The chick really doesn't like being left alone it was very happy hanging out on the couch with us, but now it's bedtime and the chick's peeping away in it's cage. I feel so bad for the little guy/gal

I think you may have just answered my question, that is, whether or not its a roo. I'd take it no problem because we have chicks arriving tomorrow, and my husband works in Cambridge, but our town doesn't alllow roosters.

Do you know if it's a roo?

I have no idea what type of chick, or if it's male/female (how would I tell?) - the sock filled with rice, warmed in the microwave made was something nice to snuggle against and the little one had a stuffed animal chick in there with it since it hatched, so that's there too. I'm sure it's just fine, seemed very happy to see us this morning, and quieted down after 15 minutes of loud peeping last night.

allow me to be an enabler for a moment:

it looks to me like you'd really like to keep this baby. you've met suggestions for unloading it with pretty lukewarm responses, so i say you keep it. would it be happier with another chicken? probably. will it die if it's alone? most assuredly not. i have a lone hen (she's waiting for her flock, which will be hatched in july and she won't see them for months after that) and she's doing just fine by herself. she came to us pecked and bloody and i think she's happy not being the bottom bird for once. she gets all the good treats and all the attention (sometimes whether she wants it or not). it's the life of riley.

as for the guinea pigs, no, i wouldn't put the chicken in with them. as the chick gets bigger, it might decide to put your pigs in the pecking order, which isn't good for them. in the meantime, the chick is probably too small and fragile to be put in with adult GPs. i'm positive they wouldn't hurt the baby on purpose, but they might squash her with their pig fat.
