One dead one sick. Coccidiosis?

I use the mixture to make the equivalent of liquid Corid concentrate, so 1.5 tsp of the powder to 10 ml or 2 tsp of water. It really doesn't matter, as long as you are giving a concentrated form 2 drops 2-3 times a day to kind of boost the treatment in a very sick bird.

Tap is tsp--just a typo. I corrected my original post.
So mixing 1/2 teaspoon of the powder with 2 teaspoons of water would = giving .34ml per pound
OR
mixing 1 1/2 teaspoons of the powder with 2 teaspoons of water would = giving 2 drops

Both of the above are basically the same thing?

Thanks again everyone. The other hens seem ok.

The sick one isn’t really getting much better or worse.

She is still keeping her feathers puffed. She is pretty low energy etc. Not really sure if she’s eating or drinking much on her own.

I made a slurry of chicken food and boiling water and blended it to a mash then have been crop feeding her some of this.

Also a syringe full of corid water 3x per day.

I did the concentrated drops for a while but now she is just on the corid water. Should be I be continuing them ?

I actually got her to eat a bit on her own today by sprinkling some food on the ground and dropping them from a height so they bounce around. She probably ate half a handful on her own just pecking at the crumbs.

Should I have seen a ton of improvement by now yet ?

I also have some Sulfa I could try instead in case it is another kind of infection but I Hear it’s harder on the birds so didn’t want to jump right to it.

Thanks again.

You can pretty much tell by looking at the chick it has Coccidiosis.

OP How are your birds today?

How many days has she been on the Corid? 5-7 days is the usual time needed, plus she needs to be drinking a normal amount of fluids day that contain the Corid. Probiotics which can be found in a small amount--about a teaspoonful daily-- of plain yogurt with cultures (something like Chobani,) can be given to help with gut health. It mixes well with egg and some wet feed. You may want to get a fecal test and gram stain by your vet to see if the Corid is helping, or if she has another intestinal problem.

If she had Coccidiosis for a long time before you caught it and started treatment if could have already done irreversible damage to her intestines.
(By the way..the "long time" could be just a couple of days)

Not sure :(

She isn't getting worse, but not getting better. Still mostly just stands around with feathers puffed.

Should we try some more concentrated corid drops? Or some sulmet?

Or just wait for a change?

Corid treats most strains of coccidia while sulfa treats a few of the worst ones. Side effects of sulfa can be deafness or kidney failure (toxicity or worst case scenario.) Get some fresh droppings checked if possible. For historical purposes, many people here on BYP in the early days circa 2007, always used sulfa (sulmet, which is no longer available.) but then sulfadimethoxine became popular, and some vets still use it--brand names are Albon and others. We can no longer buy sulfa without a prescription. But you can always try it. As KIKI said, sometimes intestinal damage can occur, and those chickens may never thrive. Maybe it would be good to read a few articles and then decide:

So, a week ago, we noticed the issue and right away started the corid water for everyone.

She wasn't eating or drinking so we were crop feeding her food mash and corid water.

Then saw your reply and gave her the pure corid liquid for a day (same day, evening/next day).

Since then, a week of crop feeding food and water, with occasional eating on her own, and the water being cord water.

Her poo seems pretty normal now so that is some improvement. Pretty small, maybe because of low food intake, but now not runny or bloody or anything.

But she is still pretty sedate. Standing around, feathers puffed. Mostly not really eating on her own etc.

Remind me.....it has been close to a week since you started Corid?
And not much improvement?
