One egg missing....wanna guess?

Penny, instead of marking an egg and leaving it to grow bacterial and explode, try fake eggs. A gold ball, a plastic easter egg, a wooden egg, a rock the right size and shape. Just a thought!

That's a better idea! I've got a fake egg in each nest box (for all the good THAT'S doing) - but I may stick a golf ball in the secret nests. That is, if we ever find them!

Thanks,
Penny

I had that problem 2-3 week ago. I was certain that my hen was laying somewhere else. Followed her, looked everywhere, nearly knocked myself out when I hit my head on the rafters in the hayloft. She had just taken a break from laying. Her appearance was the same, it wasn't a permanant break but just a break. She started laying again last week.

My brahmas are hatchery stock and I think they are bred more towards egg production than a breeder quality brahma, but that's just a guess.
The girls are 11 1/2 months old. Most of them started laying in September/October. Two of the girls didn't start laying until they were 9 months old - about two months ago.
When wintertime came, there was a slow down of about 10 days and then they all went back to laying regularly.
The 11 eggs a day has been consistent since I started keeping records, in mid-January.
When I was trying to decide on a breed to get, I tried MPC's breed selector tool and you couldn't pay me to keep the three breeds it recommended! I decided on the brahma from reading different chicken books and Henderson's Chicken Chart.
Chickapooh In one way I hope you're right and someone's taking a break. In another, I'd really like a broody.

I forgot to mention that when I opened the coop up this morning, one of the hens that had been playing at going broody, Lil' Bit, was on the nest; so that narrows my possibilities of an egg hider down to one.
Hope she doesn't get nervous from me stalking her today.

My flock of 21 is producing from 9 to 18 eggs per day, and I'm chalking the variation up to individual hen's laying schedules. There's no place to hide eggs in their coop & run, but some may be laying out in the weeds when I let them out to free range. They get let out around 4:00 pm every day. I'll probably find them when I mow the weeds!
