Hi all...I'm new here and new to raising chickens. I purchased 4 pullets (3 red sex links and 1 black sex link) from a reputable guy...very clean living conditions and not an overcrowded area. They've been here since Saturday. I haven't been noticing any bullying, although there does seem to be an alpha...this morning I noticed the alpha has 1 eye closed and I tried to check her out and couldn't get her to open it. There is no infection around the eye and it's clean. Any thoughts?

I had a bantam pecker and it pecked the eye of one of the other bantams. It was closed for about 3 or 4 days. I thought she had been blinded but she finally opened it up.

They are establishing the pecking order, they'll figure it out amongst themselves since you mentioned she's the alpha pullet. There'll be some bumps and bruises, maybe a little blood along the way. Like the previous poster mentioned, wait a few days and maybe her eye will open. If not, the concern might be debris in her eye or the onset of a bacterial infection. Then you can boil 1 cup of water with 1 level teaspoon of salt, let it cool. Then flush the eye with the mixture. Then put a little neosporin ointment in her eye to prevent infection.
