One of my ladies has a bit of a swollen eye. I rinsed with saline this afternoon. Could it be anything sinister? I was assuming some kind of injury or irritation as it is only in one eye, but I don’t know. She’s behaving quite normally, but I have seen her scratch at it from time to time, and it might have gotten a little worse over a couple of hours. Pics below, good side and bad side

- she doesn’t have it closed all the time, but we’d just rinsed it here.

I've seen a couple of threads about their chicken just closing their eye and they were acting normal. This happened to me, two of my chickens were just closing their eye and in less than one day they were open. My chickens eye weren't swollen and they weren't scratching them. This is one of the threads.->

Did you see anything when you were rinsing it? Blood, foamy discharge, pus?
No, it just looks like the area around the eye is swollen, nothing on it. Though zooming in on the photo I’m not sure if there might be something sticking in that area like a little spine from a plant…I’ll see if I can get a look when she’s up today, but she’s not very cooperative!

Keep an eye on her (sorry about the pun) cause i had a lorp whos eye went swollen and within weeks the whole side of her face swelled and she suffocated unfortunately 😢
Oh dear! That sounds awful, so sorry! Did you find out what it was? If she’s any worse Monday I’ll take her in…she seems about the same today, still scratching at it.

Turns out she had cancer that was very aggressive. Rip mango we miss you

Can you look into the eye for any bubbles or drainage? Also look for any foreign body or peck wound. I would get Tylan 50 injectable from a feed store to give orally 0.25 ml per pound of weight 3 times each day for 5 days. Or get Tylosin powder online, and treat water 1 tsp per gallon for 5 days. That will treat for mycoplasma (MG.) It may also help to put some Terramycin eye ointment in the eye twice a day after rinsing the eye with saline drops.
