one has pipped! These are my home bred mutt eggs!

So in the incubator I have 11 of cynthias awesome blue/black ameraucanas and 6 of the blue orps cooking away nicely at day 9. In the hatcher I have 12 of my own mutt eggs from our flock...one has pipped this morning and is chirping up a storm in there although all I can see is the little crack in the egg!

My FREAKING dog got into the hatcher, ripped the front off it and ate all but 4 of my eggs that were due to hatch today !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unbelievable...i mean this is the 4th incubation I haver done and the dog has never got into the room with the hatcher/incubator in it. ( dont worry cynthia your eggs are in the other incubator in another room. I mean I am so angry but he is just a dog after all. I managed to get one baby hatched out of a cold crushed egg and the baby is in the other incubator at the moment...dunno how it will do. I feel like such an idiot for letting this happen...i hate that learning things in this hobby means carnage.

Oh my, how completely bizarre! Amazing what dogs will do sometimes. The first time Adam (herechickchick) got some of my eggs, he had placed them in a carton on the table to rest before putting them in the bator and his sweet dog, who had never done anything like this, pulled the carton off the table, bringing the Barred Rock eggs (only part of what I had sent) to the floor, breaking one and jarring the rest so they didn't hatch. The dog only wanted the carton, not the eggs, LOL! If we could only get into their little brains and see what they see...

Sorry, couldn't resist. What a sad thing to happen. I guess that's the first most important lesson for anyone with chickens- everyone and everything wants to eat them, and chickens have really no way of protecting themselves.
But I have to say that I had a rooster who was street smart, and turkeys who wandered around , and turkeys are really dumb. They will literally walk into a mouth. No wonder they're the Thanksgiving bird, back then, it was probably the easiest thing to catch!
