My hens are about egg laying age but haven't laid yet. I just got home from vacation and one is making a noise I never heard before and is being really loud. It's also pecking at the bedding which is unusual. Still no eggs, but is this an egg laying practice?

Lol! Sounds like your girl is on the verge of laying! Some can have a tendancy to announce themselves, either just before or just after laying an egg. I have one girl who yells her head off every time she lays. She's not very bright and we swear, every time, she is saying 'Oh my god! You will never guess what I just invented!'

The pecking of the bedding can be a sign of nest building. They will often lay down and throw bits of bedding over their back or re-arrange it under themselves....so keep an eye out hon, you may be an egg-grandma real soon!

I have a little bantam wyandotte who has started to cluck alot and rearrange the nesting boxes by pecking and scratching.
When I,m picking up poop in a morning (lovely task) she's often in with me doing her egg dance. I hope she lays soon its been a couple of days now :)
