One lonely brand new peachick - what to do?

Good luck with your mixed family! I hope it works out, and a you can find a peafriend eventually.

Thank you!

That is a very high priority, but it's looking like next hatching season will be the best I can do. Peafriend is what little sweetpea needs.

Maybe, but our peacocks used to wander some, especially our peacock who was the lesser in the pecking order. And they are friendly with and hang out with our chickens. I was told by people on BYC that we needed to get peahens to keep them home. We got two peahens, it did work as far as keeping the boys home. Now that they are older (they are 7 years old now) I'm thinking they might be less likely to wander anyway but I'm sure the peahens help. The peahens are a challenge all in themselves, as they are both very broody and we do not want more peafowl. If I were to do it over again, I would look for charcoal peahens...not as pretty, but I was told that they are not broody. It may be that if a peafowl is raised from a chick, especially an orphan chick, it might form a stronger bond with people and be less inclined to wander.. we got all four of our birds as older birds..a couple of months old. Our cocks are pretty friendly and tame, but the hens have never been. A peahen can wander too.

Unfortunatley, once they start to wander it can be very hard to keep them at home, boys will be boys.

I'm afraid we have a very pampered peachick right now. The pea is very content in the brooder with the little Marans - they get on well and there isn't the loud peeping for company, now that there's a trio. However, it's been in the 90s daily, and we have no air conditioning, so little sweet pea seems to spend half the day out of the brooder: snuggled on my daughter's shoulder nestling under her hair, or cuddled in my lap tucked in some soft flannel. Yes, we are setting a precedent for a great big peafowl in the living room. I can think of worse things.

I'm in the same boat... Had one hatch with a bad eye and now it thinks I'm it's buddy. Enjoy it while it's small, but do try to kep it with other chicks as much as possible.

Even my tamest ones like to roam, so sadly I must keep them confined.
