I am devastated! I picked up 5 new chicks yesterday, put them in the brooder and later noticed bloddy poop. Started on meds in the water, and woke up to a dead chick this morning. I am so sad. I cleaned the brooder with bleach water, dried and put new bedding in and everyone else is eating, and drinking. I also have some thinned yogurt in there. They don't seem to know to eat that, but I keep diping their beaks in it.
Sounds like you are doing everything you can - just keep watching to see if any others look sick.
Sorry to here that you lost one, they are pretty fragile at that point.
Cocci damages the intestines. What meds are they on? Hopefully, Corid or at least Sulmet. I've noticed some folks giving Terramycin for cocci lately, which does not a bit of good for it, which is why I ask.
I am using sulfadimethoxine. Unfortunately, it is what I have here, and it is not in the budget to buy more. If I can figure out how to buy some, what dosage of Amprol/Corid?
Thanks for all of your help and concern. Everyone is eating and drinking (medicated water) I even got some thinned yogurt into everyone.
Sulfadimethoxine treats coccidia. I just had my girls on it for a week and saw huge improvement within 24 hours. Just be sure to change the water daily with meds.
Thanks so much! I feel better. I mixed some medicated chick starter with my homemade plain yogurt, and they are all GOBBLING it up!! That makes me feel so much better! I have been changing the water with fresh meds so I guess I am on the road to recovery-at least I am praying for that!
