One of my chicks just got eaten

Thank you for the replies. Now that I'm minus one chick I'm just going to go for it and keep them in the big coop from here on out. The hens, chicks and rooster seem to co-exist peacefully during the day, hopefully they won't get testy during the night. The hen & chicks always slept at the back of the crate which is all tarped off, so I figured they would be safe from any critter trying to swipe them from the front. But either the raccoon scared them from the back to the front, or they got nervous and started walking around, or the chicks got curious.

I would've originally put the dog crate in the coop from day 1, but it's a large crate and the coop has sections so that the crate wouldn't fit in there.

And oh yes, my real coop has 1/2 x 1/2 wire mesh. I don't know why they call chicken wire chicken wire when it has holes big enough for predators to attack thru.

Anyway, my dog really saved the rest of the night. She sacrified and slept outside and every so often barked and ran. Now she's under my bed sleeping it off all day.

Note to self: never trust a dog crate, unless it's wrapped in chicken wire mesh. We survived for 5 weeks, but not 5 weeks and one day.

I am so sorry - I am all for wildlife but eat my trash - even though I hate picking it up- Id rather pick that up then a dead chick.
