My chicks are about 10 days old, all were doing well until last night i noticed one of the goldens laying around with it's wings spread.
All the others are running around but this one just lays around most of the time. I took it out and looked it over and it seems okay. This morning I saw it drinking at the waterer and then it immediately went and laid under the heat lamp. Is there anything I can do for it? Any ideas? It just seems lethargic.
There's plenty of space for it to stay out of the heat and it goes to the heat on it's own. So it's not too hot. It's not chirping or anything but the others run over it sometimes and it just kind of moves over. .

Let me know what you think.

I'm HOPING what you just have there is a chick that's going to be giant. When I have chicks that are jumbos they are really REALLY lazy. They even walk on their knees if you can call them that. I mean they will walk around the brooder not even standing up....it's cute. I am hopoing that's all that you're seeing is a chunky butt chick.

if not... I cannot even begin to think what oculd be wrong with it. Do you notice it eating at all?? Only other thing i can think is take it out and put it's chest upto your ear and listen to it's breathing... see if it sounds gargled or clicky. And i fyou need reference take out another chick that's acting fine. If it sounds funky, then get yourself some terramycin powder. I've never had to do this yet for my birds but that's what i'd do in a heartbeat if I heard lung issues....the dumby could have aspirated water and be having the startings of pnemonia. I dunno if you've seen them do it yet but they can be pretty dumb with water

I have not seen it eat, and the goldens are all a little smaller than the browns so it is smaller than the others... even the other goldens I picked it up and didnt hear anything odd. I put it near the food and it just walks back to the lamp and sits down again. The other's are all running around. I guess I'll just leave it be, i did dip it's beak to make sure it had water but it was over by the water on it's own this morning. Should I be putting ACV in the water like for chicks? Or maybe some Poly- Vi or sugar water?

Just seems weird that after 10 days it's going down hill and was fine until now.

I did lose two to my dog... was cleaning out the brooder, had them in a box with a screen on top on the floor, got a phone call, came back to my dog chewing on one and another missing completely ( eaten I guess! ) At first I thought maybe this one got
hurt or something but I cant find anything on it... and that was Friday night when that happened and this didnt start until last night. Weird.....

Thanks for your suggestions, monarc !

Well, I've been gone at the ER with my brother, he's going to have his appendix out. Came home to feed my dogs and let them out , then going back. Quail looks worse, just tried some sugar water as I dont know what else to do. It's definitely not well, barely complains when I take it out and doesnt even move in my hand.
Wish I knew what was wrong.

I would separate that chick in case whatever it has is contagious. Best if its in another room completely and you wash up after touching it or anything that its touched. I hope it gets better!

I agree also put it on heat like a heating pad under the cage only half so she can get off it if she gets to warm! Try light karo just a drop in her mouth

I'm so sorry Nancy!!!

I wanted to say your dog could have crushed its insides with a paw or even a nose smoosh and that may be why you couldnt see it. Believe me these quail are pretty delicate. I just a few days ago accidentally mortally injured a hen.... I did not mean to at all. She escaped I was chasing her like mad she was really booking it in the woods, I sllipped and as I slipped I was able to grab her, I grabbed her way too hard.. her reproductive organs were popped out of her vent and she was bleeding I had to put her down. Now whenI say way too hard, barely hard at all but way too hard for a quail to be handled and dogs dont have a clue with that either. I am betting you anything that's hwat happened to it and im sorry you lost it.

My cat onetime caught one of my buttons, all he had was a scratch on its breast, nothing major yet it died a day later, here It had broken ribs and it just went down hill from that.

I doubt it was anything contagious.

I didnt think of that monarc... could easily be what happened. It is amazing in only 1.5 days of not eating.. I noticed a size difference in the one I lost. These quails grow SOOOOO fast!

Sorry bout your quail too, I had a similar thing happen with a kitten when I was doing rescue.
I felt so bad even though it was an accident.

All my other quail look great, although a little scraggly with their feathers growing in.. but all very active ! Got a few more in the bator and will be getting some more eggs in a few weeks.... they are so addicting! I like my coturnix waaaaay better than the button ( sorry buttons, cute but too flighty for me. )
