One of my Girls did not come home with the Flock last night......

I must say, I remember when I was raising chickens with my dad way back when we had a broody hen who secretly laid her eggs under our canoe and would stay there over night sometimes and we'd be worried sick. I hope she turns up

This is the strange part she came into the coup during the day "Sometime" yesterday because her green egg was in the box with the other eggs they come into the coup throughout the day and each lay at different times, however she does have a day here and there that she does not leave one for me, maybe on those days she IS laying them somewhere else... I pray that is the case.

Nothing was out of the ordinary no feathers anywhere we walked the entire 5 Acres there are a BUNCH of places she could hide, but she seems scared of the dark more than any of the others, she is always in there way before the rest of the flock come in to roost.

She is the Head Hen as well so they listen and follow her orders.

I do one STRANGE question...

Once you have put an egg into the fridge, can they be incubated? I have been wanting to incubate some of her eggs for sometime now. I have a friend who has an incubator maybe if they are still o.k. to use I could do that.

I think they are still good for a few days. It seems like I remember seeing on here when someone lost their roo they did that. Glad to know she is still around. I was hoping she was just hiding!

Christmaschicken;
We had the same thing happen last night! One of our Vorwerk girls did not come in after free ranging with the flock. The two roosters crowed and crowed and her sister was very upset. We searched around with flashlights looking everywhere to no avail. She did show up this morning, she was under the deck, and came running out when she heard my wife and son looking for her. It got down to 29F and we were very worried. She is safe and still her old quirky self. She is a long sitter when she lays, so my guess is that she got comfy, decided to lay, it got dark and she napped. Chickens will not move if it gets dark. They stay put right where they are.

I hope your ee girl turns up and everything is fine with her....

ETA: Eggs will keep fine in the frige for a number of days 7-10 as long as they do not freeze. Many people keep them there on purpose. I have and they hatched fine.

I have had this happen twice now to me. The first time my son forgot to do a head count and missed one leaving it out all night. When I went out in the morning there she was waiting to go in the coop. The next time they were all heading for the coop, when my dog felt it was time to play tag and scarced her off. My family looked for hours and could not find her. The next moring I went looking for her and could not find her. When I went home for lunch that day there she was at the gate wanting in.

I hope you have the same luck.
