Hi,

My name is Trish and I am new to keeping chooks. I got my first three girls about a month ago. I have a light sussex and two hybrids, one bluebell and one copper black.

One has been laying for about a week and the other two started yesterday, which I am really chuffed with as they are only 23 weeks old. The bluebell (Froufrou), started laying first and has to date, laid small, but perfect eggs, and one soft-shelled egg (that was a double-yolker). Today however, she is being really noisy and is spending a lot of time in the nest box. Can you tell me why this is? Is she OK? She seems OK, other than she ocassionally makes a lot of noise. Could it be she is laying a larger egg?

As I say, I am a newby, and panic over everything!

Thanks in advance.

Some chickens really like to tell the whole world they are laying an egg. Crazy Eyes, pictured here, is one of those chickens. Her Egg Song is heard throughout the farm.

HI,

Thanks for getting back to me. Oh bless her. That is a relief. Up until now they had only made small noises here and there. So you can imagine how I thought something was wrong when I heard all the ruckus this morning.

! Great to have you aboard! I agree with the oldchick...I have an Ancona that sounds like she is in distress everytime she lays an egg. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Hello all,

Thanks for all your responses and thanks for welcoming me to BYC. I love it, and it is great to be able to get some help and advice from people that know.

I feel much more at ease now. I can't help keeping a check on them - my hubby and son think I am bordering on obsessive! I can't help it, I love going out to see them and watch them. And I had no idea how excited I would be when I found my first egg!

Thanks again.
