Thank you. I do have a question, do you bury the birds you lose? Its frozen here, well its 38 today. Im not sure I can do that. I dont want to just throw her on the compost heap or something, or the trash.

I did bury my girl who died. (First loss for me.) But, it's never frozen here. Is the area under your compost pile frozen? If the compost is warm, then maybe that ground would be thawed.

Just realized this happened Friday, so you have probably already resolved this.

and sorry for your loss. they are our pets, and it's never easy.

I am soooooo sorry for your loss. It's never easy. But I'm sure you gave her the best life you could and that she had a far better life than the vast majority of chickens in the world. And while it does sound unceremonious falling off her roost and ending up in her poop, it sounds like she died in bed in her sleep, the way all of us would prefer to go.

I sadly lost two gigantic pet Cornish hens this winter to old age-a whopping 9 months old for that breed. The soil is really rocky where I live; planting a petunia is a production that practically requires a backhoe. Fortunately they died before the nearly four feet of snow we got a couple weeks ago. My ex-boyfriend, bless his heart, has a freezer for food overflow that doesn't get a lot of use. He lets me put bulk parrot food there and he let me put my two hens there for several weeks until the ground was soft enough to dig holes. I triple bagged them in garbage bags before putting them in the freezer. I haven't eaten poultry in over ten years-too much like eating my friends, so I joked that this is the only way I'd ever be putting a bird in a freezer.

I wouldn't have hesitated to use my own much used freezer if there had been room. It it's sounds kinda gross to some, take heart. My fiance had a kidney transplant last year and is immuno-suppressed from the anti-rejection meds. We wouldn't take a chance on his health, and he's never had a problem this sketchy first year, knock on wood.

Actually its sunday and it isn't taken care of, today is the first day its been warmer but we have still over a foot of snow on the ground. Im going out in a bit to see if digging a hole is even an option, then i will check the compost. If not she's going in the freezer till I can do it.

one of mine died a couple weeks ago. i kinda knew she was leaving cause she wasn't moving around and when i threw bread in, she didn't budge. when i came home one day i went out to the coop and she was laying there and ALL her feathers were off her. it turns out she was egg bound. there was i ginormous egg that was stuck in her vent. she was a pretty chicken too. she was a sex linkl red but was more orang than red.

I am so sorry about your loss. It's not easy losing a pet. My avatar is a pic of my favorite little banty that just disappeared one day (probably a hawk). I still get teary thinking about her. It's been many months. Sending hugs your way
