Chickens have a pigment gland for the egg color... sounds like you were actually pretty spot on... out of paint!

Have you tried a new ink cartridge?

Maybe her paint gland is clogged ?

Try feeding her baking soda and vinegar and see if that will unclog her paint booth who knows maybe you will get even darker eggs from the paint explosion.
