Unfortunately one of my chicks got a hold of a longish (2 feet??) piece of thick string (thin rope) and swallowed a majority of it...I saw it with about 8 inches still hanging out of her mouth..I tried gently tugging at it to see if I could get it out, or at least a little, but realized quickly I could not without hurting the bird. I snipped the rest off with scissors and she quickly swallowed it all. She's only 5 weeks old..I am worried this is going to kill her!! Does anyone have any advice or stories of chickens surviving something like this??
thanks!
Val

Welcome to BYC. That is unfortunate, and I hope that your pullet survives this. You may want to give her a laxative to help it move through her GI tract. A few drops of molasses in her food or water can do that. Go to the search box at the top of the page, and enter "chick swallowed string" and there is a page full of threads about this that give outcomes.

Thanks for the reply! I read those posts...seems like sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't..I feel terribly about this. It was a lot of string!! I will try giving her some bread soaked with EVOO.
thanks again,
Val

Update: She seems to be eating and drinking and is her usual energetic self this afternoon. I noticed several poops with semi digested rope in them..so some of it passes already..I am just hoping all of it does and she will be okay. So far she seems okay. Keeping my fingers crossed!
