no odd shape just a very small pupil the other is normal, the hen is behaving normal, eating and drinking normal. I have noticed she is reluctant to come out of the coup in the morning but to me it appears it is because she has trouble adjusting to the light. Once the door is open for a few minutes she leaves the coup. She's not bullied, she's much the old boss hen. Does anyone know why this would happen?

Can you post pictures of her eyes? That sometimes can be a sign of Mareks disease, when it affects the eye nerves. It is called ocular Mareks. Pinpoint pupil, or an irregular-shaped pupil, or color fading to grey of the iris.

Cant get a pic right now but it is one not quite pin point, the other is normal, she has been like this over a week now and sensitive to light first thing in the morning. Still doing everything else normal, running around and alerting the other chickens to the birds of prey with her very loud sound system. I know her pretty well as I've had her close to 6 years. She is an ex bat hen and has had all sorts of troubles her whole life with me but usually respiratory problems and egg laying problems, she hasnt layed in a very many years now and her chest has been clear all summer.

What breed? Vaulted skull?

Isa brown, a 7 year old ex battery hen. But sadly for me, my silver laced wyandotte ALSO developed a contracted pupil this afternoon, however with him I can clearly see there is also a change in his iris colour!!! So it would appear I have somehow got Mariks in my flock! How can this happen after all these years and no new introductions since May last year? :'(

WHat do I do now?

Have you ever seen any birds with paralysis of a leg or eing, or twisted neck? Tumors or skin lesions, and a lack of immunity to common diseases are also common in Mareks. There is a good article called “Great big giant Mareks faq” if you Google that. Hopefully, it isn’t Mareks, but if she dies, I would get a necropsy and testing done by your state poultry lab.

I read that. No I havnt had any other symptoms, and I havnt had a death for at least 4 years, just a single constricted pupil in my ex bat hens eye and now also my roos eye, but the roos eye is also changing color a little, it's no longer amber by more a pale yellow, it's very noticable. The hen had become lethargic this afternoon, this is a good 4 or 5 days after her eye having symptoms. She is lethargic but still preening, eating and drinking. I've added vitamins to their water, cleaned the coup, spritzed it with peroxide and rebedded in very deep fresh wood shavings. I dont think this is a problem associated with the hens I got 7 days ago in isolation because the hen was behaving strange to the light before they came, and 5 days ago her pupil constricted. I dont think they can become sympomatic in 2 days flat. I have 6 week old chicks in a brooder three feet off the ground on a trailer and 2 week old chicks in a brooder in the house. I'm showering and changing my clothes after I tend to the main flock where these birds are and I always tend to the youngest chicks first, then the 6 week olds. I have also put aside shoes to wear and keep seperate. I'm very worried this will sweep through the lot of them even though they are spread apart by at least 80 meters in 4 seperate lots including inside the house. I've had chickens here for the past 7 years and this is the first time I have had trouble with anything other than a sneeze.
