So- I posted a thread about my girls getting raw backs- seems it most likely is my roosters. Yeah- they get jumped a lot! Poor girls...

My dom rooster is a punk- and although a total "chicken" will goose me or my 7 year old if we are not looking. I have been tempted- ok- more than tempted- to have him butchered. But my main reason I have not is my second in line rooster (Protector) is amazingly sweet and kind (although quite forceful if he gets a hen- he tends to only get 1 hen to my doms 5 hens).....

I am worried he will become a punk - do I butcher my first one and see- or butcher them both. I kinda feel bad butchering Protector if he has NEVER done a thing wrong. ya know???

Ive read that a roo at the bottom of the order, once elevated can turn nasty. Maybe take the other rooster and put him away from the others for a while and see how the lesser rooster reacts with the girls.

Even though the punk is doing his job, I find that if they are people aggressive, it is hard to break.
I would give Protector the chance.
There are LOTS of roos to replace both of if needed!

Eliminate the alpha rooster. The second in command may be 'rough' because he is hurrying the act. If he becomes aggressive after removal of the alpha then get rid of him. Too many roosters to too few hens is generally a problem.
