One thing after another.. Bumblefoot now 🙏🏻

Hi friends… dealing with my first case of bumblefoot.. my 1.5 year old EE had mild bumblefoot so I kept an eye on for a few weeks.. another girl had crop issue so I’ve been focused on that! Tonight I peeked and Tuna’s foot and noticed it thicker and more swollen.. I decided to scratch the black circle.. and it popped off! Had some yucky stuff attached to it but came off it one piece. I did see some white slimy stuff so I pulled out what I could.. I squeezed it too and some stuff came out.. not much but a little white/yellow stuff. It didn’t seem like a kernel or anything.. the black plug had a stringy thing attached to it.. I washed the wound and applied Vertericyn and antibacterial ointment and wrapped.. does this look like I got it all? I’m so worried there is more infection. She wasnt limping or anything I just happen to look, scratch and it came off and bleed so here I am hoping I did this right!

Bandage the foot, and keep applying the medication when you change bandages. Important to keep it clean, and dry.. Will heal faster.
Bumble foot is a bacterial infection. No way to avoid the bacteria, but a good way to prevent it is.... Do whatever it takes to prevent chickens' foot from cuts. That may be, sharp stones where they walk/scratch, Other things like broken glass, and other debris. Another thing commonly overlooked is roost height. It is best for chickens not to make crash landing to the ground. That easily can injure/cut foot. Very common with large heavy hens. 2 to 3 foot roosts are sufficient. I know that chickens will roost as high as possible. Chickens by nature seek out highest part.
I think you did a nice job treating your hen.

Thank you! I certainly wasn’t expecting to have to treat her but like I said I was keeping an eye on it and last night happened to look.. scratched the black scab and it popped off and bled so at that point it was necessary to treat and wrap! I’m just hoping I got it all out. Does it look it? I can send a picture today when I change bandage. I think it probably happened due to free ranging and a cut or something. My roosts are less than 3 feet and good shape. They do freerange all day so most likely that. I hope she gets used to the wrap!

Thank you! I got home and rewrapped her.. cleaned with hydrogen peroxide and sprayed with Vetericyn then applied antibacterial ointment.. I see some white but that could be healthyskin right versus infection? This BF seemed very shallow.. not deep like some videos I’ve seen! I hope I’m doing all the right things! Now off to massage a crop.. patient number two!
