I have 11 chickens, 4 BOs, 4 GLWs, 3 BRs, They are now just over 6 mos old. Everything going well with them. But, from what I have read here, I have an extra rooster. One of them, The GLW, seems to be the head honcho. He has shown aggression to people. Sideways walking at me, trying to sneek up on me when I'm not looking. No real, what I would calll serious attacks, yet. The other rooster, a BR, has shown no agression at all. He sneeks his shots at some of the hens, but if the GLW sees him, that does'nt go well for him. The GLW really looks after the hens, calls them over when he finds food for them, watches for predators on the ground or in the air.
My question is, which rooster should I get rid of? The mellow BR, who does'nt seem to look out for anybody but himself. Or the GLW, who is watches out and takes care of the hens, But doesn't have good "People Skills"?
Thanks, Jack

Hi! There is a reason why the barred rock rooster is more timid....it's because he knows the GLW is in charge. If the GLW rooster is out of the picture, he will probably (now I'm not saying for sure) become a bit more agressive since he will become the rooster in charge.

I would just keep the one you like the best. If the GLW is a good looking rooster, and he's good with the hens, then keep him, or if you like the looks of the BR better, then I'd keep the BR.

If you get rid of the wyandotte, the barred rock will step up. Is there any way you could seperate the wyandotte from the flock for a while? There is always the possibility that the subordinate BR will become more aggressive to you once the dominant rooster is removed. Personally I would not keep any rooster that is human aggressive- especially if you have small children.

thats the problem im facing now i just lost a rir rooster to the cold weather as he refused to go in the coupe and i love spending time with my hens so im faced with a problem do i want another rooster or not...the lady i get them from has excellent birds and ill buy from no other she has recommended the buff oprington rooster as they are supposidly the least aggressive or the wydonette rooster i dont want another people aggressive rooster if i cant go in the coupe and enjoy my pets than its not worth it so......im thinking the buff oprington but if he goes bad im gonna get rid of him ....what do you recommend ive noticed after 3 days on any roo ive had they get used to my run and turn aggressive however ive never had a buff oprington or wydonette so which one is the better of the two as far as non aggression i dont feel like fighting with another roo or ill just stick with hens

Wyandottes are more likely to be agressive than orpingtons. I used to have a RIR that tried attacking me. Every time he'd come up on me all puffed up I'd snatch him up and hug him and pet him. After torturing him with my love for about 5 minutes I'd let him back down. Eventually he gave up.

We got a Black Australorp rooster when he was a year and he is calm and collective, the first couple times my 6 y.o picked up her hens he came after her and then I chased him with a broom and never another problem now we can pick him up to do care on him in the coop. I have always heard that the Buff Orpingtons are very good roosters to have. I like to have the rooster b/c of keeping the hens together and watching out for them.

thank you both so much for your advice i too like the rooster for protection and order of my ladies i will go with the buff oprington i appreciate the feedback! :) i too had rir that tried to attack me all the time even flew up 7 feet to the top of my coupe to get me lol i was like darn dude i feed you!!!!
