This RIR pullet is 14 weeks old. Bought from a feed store that ordered them from Ideal. The other 9 pullets are fine. The rest of the flock (10 hens, 1 rooster) are fine. We removed her from the rest of flock immediately. She is otherwise very healthy. Eating and drinking with no problems. She made it very clear to me this morning by clucking and running back and forth that she did not want to be alone in her kennel. I put a couple drops of opthalmalic solution in her eyes and I will clean it out today with sterile water. What else can I do? Should I vaccinate everyone? Should I start her and/or everyone else on antibiotics?

Last week I had one 18 week old pullet (bought from two different places, no relation) die for no apparent reason. She was fine one day, but the next day she became real weak and would not stand. We removed her from the rest of the flock and gave her some sugar water with a syringe, but she was dead the next morning. No watery eyes or wheezing.
Is this just a coincidence or should I be worried that my flock is gonna start dying off one by one because of some kind of virus?

Also, it has been very humid, wet, and rainy the last week. The chicken run has been very wet and muddy, but has dried out alot, therefore, the babies and big girls have been loving their dust baths again. Can the weather or them getting wet cause the chickens to have respiratory problems or other any other problems?

Any help and suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

She is worse today. Wheezing alot more. Very congested and rattling loudly. Won't or can't open left eye. Eye is still bubbling water and swollen. She is eating and drinking and otherwise alert and seems healthy. We pulled her from the rest of the flock yesterday. No other symptoms are seen with any of the other birds. Today we started her on Duramycin 800mg. If I don't see any improvement within the next couple of days, should I go ahead and start everyone on Duramycin?
Any ideas on what illness I maybe dealing with.

Sorry I don't know , but giving you a bump, maybe someone else can help.

There are quite a few Resp illnesses Chickens can get. IB- infectious Bronchitis, CRD- chronic Resp Disease, MG- Mycoplasma gallisepticum or the other Mycoplasma one MS I can't remember what the S stands for....syn(something). Google Chicken Diseases and you will find a ton of good info. If you can narrow it down to wich one it might be, they usually offer suggestions for abx.

A couple drops of the infant vitamin Poly-vi-sol without iron is a good start. Wish I could be more help. I hope your Baby gets better!!

Sounds like a respiratory infection. I had a couple hens shipped to me that arrived with the same symptoms. I used duramycin and vitamins in the water for about a week and kept them isolated for 3 weeks. They were better in the first week but I kept them quarantined longer out of paranoia I think lol. They got better and are fine now, and no-one else was affected. At the time, they came from very rainy, windy and wet hurricane-type weather in Ohio. My opinion -Keep her warm and dry best you can and use the antibiotics religiously, daily for 7 days. If she still hasn't improved any by then, switch to Tylan 50.

I am thinking CRD as well or some type of pneomonia. It has been so rainy the last week, I am afraid that is causing this respiratory problem. I will keep updating ya'll on her progress. Hopefully, she will get better soon. If I start all of my birds on vitamins, can I still eat the eggs? If not, for how long? Should the birds always be on vitamins, sick or not?

Thanks for the help.

whenever you get new chickens "more than 21 days old" give IB + La Sota vaccine. DO NOT start with anti biotech unless you see a symptom of sickness because the anti biotech simply kills the good bacteria that the chicken has for better health! So, give vitamins right away after you finish the vaccine. Vitamin C increases the immunity while Vitamin E protects the nervous system of the chicken. You can add to that "Good Bacteria" supplements from the vet to increase the protection.

One week after, start giving the worms different medicines following the vet instructions. Please do not hesitate and leave protection aside as you will regret like me loosing my most loved hens ..

if you notice green poop from the beginning, then definitely get anti biotech to kill the bacteria your chicken suffers from.

This way you protect your hens from virus attacks "no treatment after infection", bacterial attacks "using vitamins first then anti biotech in case you see any sickness alarm, and finally worm attacks by going against cocci etc etc ..

Hope this is of any help to you!

Kareem
