I'm starting on a new coop for my Welsummer chicks arriving in the Spring. Once they start laying I want to keep records of the eggs that each hen lays, color, etc. I have heard of one way nesting boxes so the hen can't get out once she lays her egg. This will give me a chance to record what each hen produces. I have gone thru many pictures on the "Coop Design" page and didn't find any pictures of what I am looking for. If any one has this set up and can post some pictures, I would appreciate it very much. Any other suggestions of how to keep track of what each hen produces would be appreciated as well. BTW, I am not going to sit and wait on each hen to do her business and then see what she has done. :)

Thanks in advance.

An effective trap nest can be made using a inward swinging door made from wire shelving. A section of shelving that is approximately 4 inches less than the opening height is suspended from nest ceiling at front of opening. The nesting hen can push the wire gate inward allowing her to enter. When it closes behind her cleats mounted on the nest box sides prevent it from being pushed outward.

If this doesn't make sense pm for phone number and I can explain in greater detail.

With a one-way door, it's necessary for you to check the nest box frequently - at least once an hour. You wouldn't want your hen captured in the nest box without food & drink for hours on end.

That said, I really like the idea of a one-way door. I have 8 RIRs & would love to know which ones are laying.
