Everything so far appears on track! (I think...anyway!)

Candled eggs again this morning (last candled on Day 3) and there is a deffinate U-shaped dark spot in at least 22 of the 36 eggs. Of the remaining eggs, the 12 Penedesenca eggs are just too dark to candle well (I'm using a home made candler, but have ordered a better one), and only 2 eggs of the 36 look bad. One is very porus but has great veining, so I don't know wether to keep it going or not, and the other egg looks clear or infertile maybe (I will give it another couple days, but will toss it then if no progress is made). But I don't see any eggs with blood rings or spots or anything else that would worry me! So I am quite excited!

I, however, do not notice too much of an air pocket at this point.

Maybe I'm just not seeing it with my cheap home made candler? I have the humidity stable between 46% and sometimes up to 50% but never over 50%. Is it too high or just right? Should I wait another few days and see?

Forgive my incompetence, but this is all so new to me and I want so badly to get it right, and every time I candle and see progress it gets me motivated to no end! lol My DH laughs and insists that knowing my luck, every egg will hatch and I'll be 'stuck' with 36 peeps. I want (like every good wife) him to be wrong, BUT I would LOVE it if I had a great hatch! So, maybe I should hope for him to be right just this once? lol

To the bator experts here...any advice for me on the next 14 days? I am SO anxious!

4H, I am by no means an expert....but..sounds like you have it all going just right. The clear egg is probably not fertile. As far as the next 14 days.....I would take up some sort of hobby! LOL Something to occupy your time...needlepoint? LOL Its hard not to just stand there and stare...and when the day comes...say day 18 and on...you will be NUTS! I sure hope you have a great hatch...someone on here posted a drawing of the air cell developement....hopefully they will post it again for you.

I've seen that drawing you speak of, and that is why I was concerned. And the air pocket is directly connected to the relative humidity, I read. With such good development going, I dont want to drown them!

As for hobbies, I have several, unfortuantely, most of them involve chickens! lol

I am staying away from the bator for the most part, only checking now and then to record temps and make sure the newer egg turner is doing its job (and so far so good!) but its hard to just sit back and wait! I want to just curl up and go to sleep for 14 days! lol

The air cell should be small now, it will increase as the time progresses. The one that is porous but has veins, definatley leave it, I had one of those hatch in my last batch. Personally, I would leave the clear ones until the next candle--by then you can say with confidence that they are gone--although you are probably right now about them.

Candling is fun, I love it! Enjoy your eggs, I hope they do well. The best advice I can give is once you hit day 19 and stop turning, try not to open the bator. It has made a big difference in my hatches. I mean, you open it to remove chicks or add water, but keep it to a minumum. Enjoy!
