One week. One hen down... :(

Roosters help with predators as they are extremely vigilant. They'll give warning for the hens to seek shelter and be the first line of defense against any attack. Unfortunately that means many times they sacrifice their lives so the hens can get away. Personally I'm a fan of roosters. They look great and aid in flock management, coraling your girls, finding good food sources and keeping watch for trouble.

Three hens may not be enough for one rooster but that's depending how aggressive he is with his mating. If they start to show signs of wear (too many feathers pulled out) you can always add another hen or two.
