~Zitkala dipped her head in silent agreement. "Indeed." Her long tail swirled around her legs like the rippling reeds of a rare lake as a gentle breeze toyed with her hair. "It was odd how Paytah attacked Macawi afterward, though, wasn't it?"~

"Perhaps not" Smoke murmured thoughtfully. "I wonder if it even was Paytah. I nearly broke his leg - he wouldn't have been a match for macawi in his state" he realized carefully.
~Zitkala's neck shot up all the way and she tensed up. He's insinuating my daughter is lying. Brushing the hasty conclusion away, Zitkala forced her head back down and grazed, as in calm thought. "Who else could it have been, then?"~

Smoke lowered his head slightly, showing Zitkala he meat no harm. He shrugged, "I dont know - the thought only just occurred to me"
~Zitkala looked up again, probing her leader's eyes, pools of perceptual intelligence. "You must have an idea who it could've been if you don't think it was Paytah, Smoke. A thought cannot be dismissed until it is contradicted."~

Smoke noticed a subtle change in Zitkala's scent, and he raised his head to the same level of hers. "Did you see that pinto filly who was screeching up a storm? She had snapped big time. I can see that yearling doing some serious damage" he nickered, lacing his voice with authority.
~Zitkala titled her great head, trying to evoke the memory of the battle she wanted to try so hard to forget. "Ah, yes." Zitkala dug a front hoof into the cushioning grass, mentally calculating how much damage a yearling filly truly could do. "It's possible Macawi would've tried to face down a filly of similar age- but why would she lie and tell us it was Paytah? Perhaps she was ashamed at being beaten by a horse of relative size, and decided to fantasize Paytah as her opponent to us so she seems more powerful..."~
