One Wyandote not laying

... feel her abdomen and see how it compares to her sisters who are laying, does hers feel soft/squishy

Okay - here is the result of our examination of Mango (and her sister for a control subject!)
Mango's abdomen is very soft and squishy. She feels like a balloon filled with water. The other Wyandote that is her sister (Sunshine) feels much firmer.
We also examined our Cuckoo Maran and she feels quite firm as well.Mango is definitely squishier by far than our other hens. What does this mean?

She may be internally laying, she may have some sort of reproductive cancer, peritonitis, or infections from internal laying....all of these causing fluid to build up in the abdomen. None of it good. There is no cure for any of this. You can sometimes help them with antibiotics and they can come back somewhat, but the antibiotics are only a short term cure. Eventually she will need to be put down. I am really sorry about your hen.

well ... that's what I thought we might have to do. Been mentally preparing for it.
I guess with these kind of infections we can't even eat her, can we?

Thanks for your help on this.

I'm not great at navigating the threads and replies yet. But when I get time I'll take a closer look. It feels like a great site to be a part of.

I am not sure if you should eat her. I don't eat my birds, but you might ask this question in our emergency section. They might have this answer for you.

Sorry about your bird. I am dealing with something similar in my flock with a hen with what I think has peritonitis and very frequent yolk laying. She laid a lash egg this morning. So I am sure her end is near as well. Good luck with your hen.

It can be a couple things...usually it is a gelatinous glob of reproductive lining that can look like a golf ball or a funky piece of week old meat! LOL Sometimes they are a bunch of backed up yolks that have been cooking inside the hen for days on end. But it is never good when they do this. It can be as simple as being the end of their laying cycle or something more like internal infections, cancer or serious peritonitis. My hen is a mess. She is very healthy otherwise, but she can lay 2 yolks daily for weeks on end...no membrane, no shell. Sometime the yolk comes out first and then the shell plops out 30 mins later.

Wow I have never heard of this but it's good to know that it's possible that it can happen to my girls and at least now I will sorta understand what is going on instead of freaking out! Thanks! :thumbsup

I'm still mystified as to why our hen Mango is still acting so healthy and happy if she hasn't laid an egg in over 10 months. Peritonitis or not, you'd think her insides would be completely messed up ... making her feel bad.
They are amazing creatures!
