I have noticed several posts regarding a specific problem about chicks, just bought, growing lethargic, chirpy, and eventually growing immobile and die.

Now, I have heard that it is Pasty Bottom Syndrome, but what really bugs me is that so many are having this problem that they are dying left and right. For those who do not know, PBS clogs the cloaca vent and makes it impossible for a chick to pass fecal matter. This results in the slow poisoning of the body which can result in death faster than you may be prepared for. Now, I just bought three chicks the other day, one got sick and began slowly dying, another, which was TOTALLY healthy began growing sick as well. Now, according to others, PBS can be... cured? by continuous washing of the vent, usage of mineral water, vitamins, and olive oil and sugar water. It still bothers me how many chicks among the forums are dying from the same thing at the same time, and it also bothers me that it seems to almost have contagious qualities.

Please, I wish for us to all try to continue to wash and check each chick's vent each day, and if you have not already, make sure to find some antibiotics for your chicks such as iodine if the chick's bottom looks irritated. Another thing: I want all of you to call the stores you bought your fuzzy lovelies from and ask where they order them from. If we can pinpoint one or two hatcheries then, we may be able to get somehwere.

I gave my poor chick some olive oil, and I hope she can recover, but I do not know if she will.

And, scrambled eggs are full of proteins your chicks may need. If they do not seem to be eating, try and see if they will eat some eggs, which will reduce their stress levels which will help stop this terrible process of blockage.

Now, I want to know for myself: if she is already being poisoned, and I am treating her for it and cleaning her and giving her what I have, will she recover?

What do you mean "if she is already being poisoned?" She will recover if you prevent pasty butt by what you stated.

I work at a feed store and we have had some pretty nasty pasty butts. I clean them as I find them and I check often. Once I had one that was pasty and her vent was swollen. She did not make it even after repeated cleanings but the other day had one the same way and she made it. All you can do is keep them clean and I give all mine electrolyte/vitamin water that has live microbiles in it. Seems to help with the pasty.

Im only a beginner and this is my first time ever raising chicks, but Could pasty but be the result of different foods?. Over the past three weeks I have been raising 50 chicks. Not one of them have died or had pasty but. I also give mcmurray electrolytes and broiler booster in the water of my soon to be laying hens.
