In 2008 I made a bunch of spagetti sauce, both smooth and very chuncky, for myself and my son. Son moved out so I have tons of sauce left. I don't eat much in the way of spagetti, so I was wondering if it is ok to pour some of the spag sauce on the layer pellets as a treat for my girls. The chunky type contains, besides tomatoes, onions, peppers, green beans, garlic and very mild jalapenos.

Onions are not good for dogs, how about chickens?

I wouldn't pour it on their pellets but, that's just me. Maybe because they cost so much or maybe because I want them to eat all their nutritious food before I give them anything else. I'd make them some noodles or pour it over bread. Mine won't eat onions in sauces like that. They pick out what they like and leave the rest.

Mine silly hens refuse to eat their pellets but they love spag sauce. I was hoping to get them to eat by pouring the sauce over their pellets.

Wow. What do you feed them? I would force the issue (tuff love) by not feeding them anything but the pellets or crumbles for awhile. Maybe even try another brand. I feed layena and they love it but, I never give them anything else until they've eaten their laying pellets. I even have a little pasture I put them in every day but, I won't even let them in that until they've eaten their pellets.

DON'T FEED IT TO THEM! All I have heard is that, since onions are so strong, it will get into the eggs flavor and make the eggs taste bad!

I agree. The treats come after they've eaten their meal (pellets). Just like kids, they'll take the dessert over the nutritious stuff.

I've given my hens onion along with the leftovers and the first time I did it I picked up one of my fav's and she had onion breath. I asked if she wanted a mint?

Feeding your chickens your spaghetti sauce with onions will not hurt them, and as long as you are not feeding them the sauce on a daily basis, the flavor of your eggs will not be affected. My chickens eat leftover sauce whenever we have it and they love it. Of course, if you add noodles, they will love it even more!

I feed mine onion, green, red, yellow and white. Whatever is around, but not large quantities and I don't deliberately give them extra. I haven't had any eggs taste off.

Imp- but I don't push it either

Unlikely there is enough onion in there to do anything. The main danger of onion and garlic is in long term feeding or very high amounts. In some animals it damages red blood cells but the amount it takes all at once to do that is fairly high when we aren't talking about eating actual onions or concentrated sources. I don't know if it even effects chickens. They would have to lack the enzyme to digest that part of onions like dogs and cats do. So far mine have proven otherwise. A bag containing 6 large onions that had been in the pantry for no one could remember how long was suppose to be disposed of. It made it outside where the bag was later found empty with a strong onion smell surrounding several happy bantam chickens. They are all still alive a month later.
