Coturnix supposedly need 1 sq. ft. per bird, but I've had mine in as little as 1/2 sq ft. per and they got along fine. Buttons are supposed to have the equivalent to a 10 gallon fish tank at least for a pair (male/female, 2 females or 2 males), but I also have mine in less roomy quarters. I will say though that the buttons do have feather problems, they need more room than they have. I'm working on it, but it's not quite there yet. I also have too many males in my pens, but they are just so cute, I can't kill them
No one in my area wants them, so I'm kinda stuck. Of course if I hatch them, I always end up with more males than females, so I'm still in the same boat regardless of what I do. You can keep males only together if they haven't been with females and have been raised together, but this wouldn't work for me. I'll figure it out eventually
Check out
http://zebrafinch.com/NewButtonquail/MainQuail.html for help with colorations. I will say though that the a lot of the buttons pictured are very nicely marked, so it can be difficult to determine what colors you have. Also, if the colors are crossed (i.e.-silver redbreast, golden redbreast, etc) it is hard to tell for sure what colors they are.
Okay, back to your regularly scheduled swap
