Online Hatcheries - Comments?

I think if all you want is healthy birds that lay well then just about any hatchery will suit you. Most hatcheries seem to have good customer service and healthy chicks. Good luck with your chicks!

if i was to order from a hachery it would be cackle out of lebinon MO you will get heathy birdsthey will not be show birds but they will be good birds at a good price . with that said if you whant real marans you should order from a breader hacherys dont have them .I say a good pure blood chicken eats the same amout of food ass mixed/hachery stoc birds so why not get the best. wish you the best on your new and upcoming flock

I have ordered from MPC and Idea. They both have great customer service. Idea tells you what is in your assortment if you go that way. I have also hatched eggs thru the mail. My hatched eggs were larger and better looking chicks. Yes closer to standard. If you just want eggs or meat go with hatcheries. but if you want standard healthier and the experience of the hatch order eggs. yes getting eggs is a crap shot sometimes, but you will cherish the ones that do. If you get hatchery chicks always say that they are. i have gotten chickens from people who were not forthright about where they got the chicks/eggs. Which had people telling me to cull cull and cull some more. Chicks from wither breeders or hatcheriers make great pets. All are pretty. Hope this helps

Well I would like to second cackle hatchery. I have never had a problem with their birds. They are healthy, make great layers and fit the breed standard pretty well. Their ameracaunas are actually EE's but I know mine were awesome. They usually put more birds in when they ship to keep your ordered birds warm as well. Sorry I don't know anything about the other hatchery, but I do live less than 20 minutes from cackle so I get all my hatchery stock from them.

My Wyandottes are from Cackle and they have been very healthy so far. They have not started laying yet but they are only 24 weeks. They don't have as nice markings as a breeder bird but they have been friendly. Can't wait to see their eggs!

I too have been happy with my cackle birds. We purchased 25 in July, they sent 27 and we are at 23 birds. Much better success then the birds we purchased at Tractor supply in the spring. I would order from cackle in a heartbeat. I honestly can't sex the 13 silkies we have yet, however we did get 4 pheonix HENS 1 pheonix rooster, 1 sumatra rooster and 4 hens...not bad for straight run.

I now have two flocks (2 1/2 years old & 23 weeks old) from Ideal hatchery and I am very pleased. Very healthy birds and most of my dark brahmas are in fact breeder quality. "Teri" from Ideal is a BYC member and you can PM her with any questions you may have right here on BYC.

I want to repeat what CityChicker posted. My Pet Chicken is not a hatchery, only a middleman.

What about Meyer? I hear that is MPC's source. Does anyone have any pix of Wellsummers, Barnevelders or BCMarans from them? If so, any pix of the eggs as well?

I just got three adorable silver spangled hamburgs from Meyer this morning....they arrived safe and sound (with no packing peanuts either--whew!). I had no problems with the customer service at Meyer and they were always helpful, friendly and patient. At one point I went through the list of available chicks and I asked her 10-12 different breeds and she patiently checked hatching schedules for each of these. I thought they were very reliable, and the chicks seem very healthy!

Delivered this morning in the box shown:
