I was surprised to see an egg in with the Buff Brahmas today, I didn't expect them to lay for a while yet. I really thought the dark brahmas would start first, they are bigger. Who knew? I let the light Sussex out to roam today, and those cochin hens that need their own coop. Somebody laid an egg in the middle of the back barnyard in the dirt! Silly hen. The new dog was having fun playing with the GP, Joel today once it started cooling off.
Tomorrow I have a lady coming to look at goats, she wants to trade some silver Sussex juveniles. I really , really need to get more coops done! I did get to the hardware store and bought hinges, latches, screws etc. to finish off the mini coop. That was the most expensive part. Tomorrow after she goes I need to get to Jackson and buy some more lumber. Hope they have a barrel of bread for me at the surplus store.

It looks like I know where to get Buff Brahma and maybe Silver Sussex from in the future.

Even though my plate is full I just can't stop.

I totally know where you are coming from! Wasn't I just saying the other day, I have enough breeds? But these are Silver, and that's my last name. I really should have some.

Ok, now I am psyched up! We struck a deal and in 2 weeks I get the flock! I was looking them up and apparently they are quite rare. Cool! Now of course , I am going to need buff Sussex so I can have them all. Bwa ha ha! Tomorrow I am going to work on that coop unless it rains.

So it didn't rain again today, must be a month now, tinder dry. I did get more work done on both coops. The mini coop just needs the door, the window and the roof put on. I got the inside painted, as well as the outside. The big coop got 5 more boards put on, and I cut the plywood for the big side opposite the shower door. So that side just needs two more small pieces of plywood to put on either side of the nest boxes. Then I need to put the partition in the middle and the doors on both ends. It will be great to get them done, then I need to build the run for the big coop. Maybe I can finish both tomorrow ! There's a happy thought. How is your coop build going, Coach?

The coop is coming along, I got the roof framed in and now i'm painting the used sheet metal on both sides,I used old metal on a barn one time and only painted the outside and had to look at rusty old metal.Painting it makes it look a lot brighter and cleaner. Our co. fair started yesterday and we are going tomorrow night. They have a large chicken house full of good birds and i know half of the people showing. It did rain there about 2 weeks ago so ever thing greened up here again. We do have 2 big oaks turn brown and i hope they are not dead. I'm looking over more birds to take to the sale Saturday i think i'll take the rest of the ducks ,we don't have the heart to eat them---but they are really good -- so i'm going to sell them. I got one setting on eggs and when they hatch i'll selling the family. I've seen mommy duck and babies go for a bunch.

Great! When I went out to work on the coop today it was in the sun.

But I did manage to secure the plywood on the bottom front section. Then I screwed the nest box on and another couple boards on top. I have metal roofing I got cheap at Lowes because it was a special order someone didn't pick up. I cut two boards for either side of the nest box and screwed them on
So the front and back are on, just need to do the divider and the doors on either end. My mini coop door got painted today, now I need to put in the window and the door, plus the roof. Still no rain here, just hot and dusty. Makes me sneeze.
My buff orpington hens laid 8 eggs today. The funny thing is, I only have 5 hens in there!!!

Some of those hens are on double duty,i feed and water mid day but wait for the afternoon shade for the coop building.Like i said these are old 4 foot tall pens that i but a taller roof over 2 days ago i had the wire off the top and roof undone so i was hoping for no rain and no raccoons. After the roof was framed up i got the tops of the pens sort of covered up.i'm just keeping my fingers crossed and letting the dog out a lot. I got a egg from my new hamp pullets yesterday!!!

I got my first two eggs from the quail today, so they went right into the Bator. I just set 33 eggs yesterday. (Quail I got on swap ). So today I dragged the two sheets of roofing up on top of the Mule , lashed them down, and took them to the new coop. Tacked in place, I need to find my roofing nails. Nailed another board on the end , took measurements for pieces of plywood and doors needed. Seems like the never ending project. I put the door in place for the mini coop and either the frame or the door, or both are crooked. So I will have to unscrew the plywood and make adjustments. Hope to get the roof painted for it today. Must go to town to get chicken feed before the long weekend.
