Only had my pullets for 48 hrs and...

My dogs started whining. They can't get to the coop, have there own area for the time being.
Anyway I looked out and what do I see but a red fox. Fox didn't even give my dogs a second look, but when she spotted me, tool off for less dangerous grounds.

She's well known in my area. Has a den under a neighbor's barn and has raised many kits.
Can't believe it took her only 48 hrs to find my pullets.

If she's not careful, she'll not see her next litter of kits.

If birds are well secured live and let live I have always strived to coexist with the wildlife around the various places I've kept flocks....

Imagine you are the FOX. You need to eat. You don't have a speed pass to get meals at McDonald's. You have children to feed. (kits)

Now back to earth, and you are actually a chicken owner... You need to do everything to protect your flock of chickens. That means making a secure area for them. Secure run will protect them from fox.
Killing that fox is far from a solution. There will be another fox, or raccoons, or weasels Etc. When will the killing cease.???
What will be your action be if a hawk decides to take your chickens???

I look at it like this. A persistent critter is one that will not be tolerated.

Not worried about Hawks or owls. Completely covered run, besides there protected by law.

I spent a lot of time and money making a secure home for my chickens, but I don't need a fox or other critter coming around in the middle of the day (or night) terrorizing my chickens.

Oh they have a keen sense of smell, and she probably knows more about what goes on your neighborhood than you do.

Kill her if you want to, but it's hard to 'kill them all'(all the predators).
Better to have a secure coop and run.
Chances are is she can't get in, she'll look elsewhere for food.
Not like she hasn't survived without your birds for all the years you say she's been living there.
Watched a red fox bounce off my run in the middle of the day couple springs ago.
Some of the chickens just watched.

Fox stopped 20' away to say WTF!

Laid down to ponder the situation....then left not sure it ever came back.
