I have a small backyard flock, 2 barred rocks and 4 black australorps. We got them as chicks kind of late, June 27th to be exact. I figured that would put them into laying mode around the end of November. Well, the lead hen, Braveheart, started right on schedule. But she's the only one that lays anything. When she started, I switched the whole flock from pullet grower feed to layer mash. Could this be a protein content issue? Also thinking it may be a lighting issue....maybe some supplemental lighting would help since we are coming up on the shortest day of the year. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
) anyhoos, all were born around April 11th. Only one is laying. I was told by my friend, 'chicken Pete' to do the low watt light on a timer to make up the difference in sunlight. Now, I have a coop that is about 4w x 5l x 3h. The eaves where the hardware mesh is for ventilation only sticks out about 8 inches at most? So what I'm wondering is if any of y'all do use a low watt bulb, do you use the kind of clamp on lamp like you'd use in a brooder and just shine it in? And do you need to protect it somehow from the elements?
