Only want to order 2-3 chicks

Break an order with someone.

I'm no expert, but from what I've read here, I'd stay FAR away from the feed stores. There's always a chance of getting a mistake, no matter how you get your chicks, but it seems like the feed stores are worse for it (selling cockerels as pullets, claiming that X is Y breed when it's really Z, letting the poor things be handled by anyone who walks in the door).

My pet chicken will let you order as few as three if you live near/in a major city. When I called them the minimum order for me was also 8. The shipping would have been like 50 dollars. Like the others said, See if anyone near you is hatching any chicks. That's how I started last year, I got some of the breeds I wanted to start with, then I met some BYC friends who had some other breeds I wanted.

many of us sell chicks so location is needed. Also I just joined an order for meaties with a few other people on craigs list, often you can find people splitting orders on Craigs list or BYC.

The "Family, Farm & Home" store near my house offers many different chicks in the spring. meaties, turkeys, ducks, and about 10 different types of layers. I picked up 4 last spring and each was as a different breed. They are doing fine other than a little spoiled.

I am in Northern, CA Sacramento area. I am looking for a couple of EE and a black star, or something will crank out the eggs. I have a white leghorn, and a New Hampshire Red. My coop is 4x6 and the max I would like to keep in there is 6. Does that sound about right?
