I will use one of the gallon red plastic things (well, for the first week or two I will prolly use a dish with marbles in it) if that's all I can get, but would have *preferred* a mason-jar base because a) it should last longer, b)more appropriately sized for chicks, and c) I just basically don't like the look or feel of plastic when I can avoid it. I know that last thing is not a real compelling reason

Performance Poultry is my new neighbour! From the outside it looks like a great facility and the owner was very nice on the phone. We are building our coop right now, so when it is closer to completion we will obviously order from them and we can pick up ourselves. I'm glad to hear the positive feedback here. Our TSC seems to be out of stock on a lot of supplies, but there are several co-ops that I will go to instead.

Hi from the Ottawa Valley.

I've called Performance Poultry as well. They seem to be very busy right now and the person who answered the phone didn't have time to talk to me. He promised to call back later this week.

I'm very excited about keeping hens. I have a neighbour that I get barn laid fresh eggs from but I think chickens are just delightful....plus I have lots of horse caca that they can scratch around in and spread for me...

Well, I've got lots to learn and not oodles of time to do it in...so I'd best get to it.

By the by...do any of you know if there are rescue organizations in Canada for commercial layers like in the UK? I feel so badly for those poor battery hens.

I drove out and picked my chicks up from Performance Poultry yesterday, and the owner, Jason, is indeed rather frenzied at the moment

He only does about 4-6 wks of hatches per year, and it must be very very very hectic with almost your entire retail output for the year being concentrated into just a month or so. Better him than me anyhow

The chicks look great, btw.

Pat, you should have stopped by! You more than likely drove by my house on your way to Performance Poultry. We are the house with the apple orchard, the 2 storey shed under construction and a bunch of kids running around.

What breeds did you get?

Performance should be busy - 5 of us out here have an order being flown in tonight of day olds! So exciting.....and happy to find a Canadian supplier!!
Jason is fantastic to order through - very nice man and helpful.
There is also Genetic Preservation in Quebec sending an order in June out here too.

I got a buncha Speckled Sussex, also a smaller number of Golden Campines and Buff Chanteclers to see how I like them.

The GC chicks are tremendously pretty - tan/brown/grey marbled sort of effect.

Sounds nice, I might have to call Jason again and ask him to change my order! I just called and then emailed ordering 7 RIR, 7 BR, 7 Ameraucanas (hoping for white), and 7 Chanteclers (partridge or white if the Ameraucanas aren't white).

My DH told me to ask for a rooster too when they contact us (just to help alert us and the dogs to predators), I want a spectacular-looking one.

Yes, we just moved here last fall, from Hamilton, and every day we are in awe of what a great location we are in!​

Good morning all! Well our chicks just arrived yesturday afternoon, 24 day olds from the local co-op store. All arrived alive, and all are alive today a full 24+ hours later! i am very supprised.
We are a family of 5 + 2 chocolate labs. We live just east of windsor and hopefully we can get a good ontario thread going here!

Hi Robinhood! Good to see you post again! what kind of chicks did you get? I just ordered 26 broilers from a coop in Blenheim--should be here May 26. Ironically the same day my broody will be hatching. the broody is one of those OEG mixes I got. She is sitting on 8 eggs, so don't know how many she will hatch. This is my first time for broilers and also for having a broody. Good luck with your new birds!
