Hay is a perfectly good source to raise your chickens on. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH HAY. Everyone may have there own preference but using hay is just fine. And the plus side to hay is that your chickens will love scratching and eating what they can of it basically leaving only the stems. One of the benefits of hay is that it will decompose faster than straw and chips in your compost pile. I have used both hay and straw and will continue to use both. Both are good. So are pine chips.
