I'm allergic to it. Work scares the pants off me now that I'm retired.

On the serious side, I'm thinking of getting a few more peeps this spring. Not many, just a dozen or two, or maybe three, or.....

I've sure met a lot of nice folks thru this site and it's wonderful to log on and find that one more has decided to join us. Starting my day by checking on my friends here has become an integral part of my waking up.

This is my 20th year of retirement, sort of. I tried not working at all and soon became bored with inactivity. So I started out picking up a few carpenter jobs here and there and it escalated drastically into a full time construction business with my middle son David. We soon gained a reputation for integrity and quality workmanship. Calls would come in with the first words out of the callers mouth would be "I was told that you were the most honest contractor my friend has ever met". This resulted in a workload building custom homes that kept us booked when many others were idle. The average wait time for us to do a project would be 18 weeks. At one point we had enough work to keep both of us and 4 others busy. Now thanks to the economy and government interference it's just Dave and I. Its been 3 years since we have built a new house and we were just keeping our heads above water with repair jobs and re mods. All the lumber yards in our area are gone and most of the reputable contractors have folded. We must constantly bid against those who are licensed and insured and there is now way we can compete against their lowball bids. The cost of being a legitimate business costs us at least $800 per month and that must be factored into our prices. Now the government is adding more regulations to drive our costs even higher.

I love working but it looks like our company might have to close and David will be forced to look for a new occupation. That's sad as he is an incredible carpenter who sincerely cared about insuring the customer received the highest possible return on there investment. For myself I will miss the creativity and satisfaction our work has afforded me, but more importantly I will miss the sense of pride I have had while working with my son.

Spring may technically be only a few weeks away, you'd never know it by how things are here this morning. It's 23 degrees and overnight we received an additional 2" of snow added to the 2" that came yesterday afternoon. We had a brief respite that melted the standing snow down to about 10" but this new accumulation negated that. I read on the other thread how anxious everyone is for spring but if you live around here you have to know in your heart that spring is truly another 2 months away. Planting my garden is the best indication that spring has arrived and I don't even start working up the soil until Mother's Day. Frost remains a problem well into June so we must just except the fact that it is still going to be cold for awhile longer.

I talked with Ranchhand yesterday and she said Todd was outside working on her chicken runs, making them more accommodating for her. I was happy for her and then she deliberately ruined my good feelings by telling me he was wearing shorts. Just ain't right.

Viejo, I know how difficult chicken math is and I hope you are better at it than I. 4 + 2 + 1 + + + = 50. Simple addition right. Now I don't even want to think what might happen if I got into multiplication.

I hope my darlin Thistle is feeling much better today. I understand she had a killer headache yesterday. I sympathize with her feeling under the weather and still having her family to take care of. Plus she has the added worry of having them monster birds to worry about caring for. I've seen the television show "When Animals Attack" and it makes me worry that an Edinbrough television news promo might be "tune in at six for the latest on When Rheas Riot".

Probably but then again don't Scots roll their rs? That creates another whole problem. Rauchous Ratites Rioting rock realm as Ravenous Rheas Revolt over reduced rations. Phwew, just typing that has plum wore me out and I don't want to guess how tired I be if the Thistle was there chasing the H out of them.

Spite, chicken math occurs when one trys to buiy a limited number of chicks. You plan of 4 but they're so cute you get 8 or 12 instead.

Ah, that makes sense! Thanks for telling me.

Opa, I really am sorry to hear about the problems you are having with your company. This economy is really terrible, it is affecting so many good businessmen and women.

Terrilhb, you are right this is a very nice place with very nice people.

Ranchhand, I cannot believe that it is actually warm enough for shorts for you there. Lucky you!

It warmed up into the 50's yesterday, that was nice. Unfortunately we have so much snow that it is starting to melt and make a huge mess. Right now it is in the forties and pouring, so we are expecting quite a bit of flooding in the area. I love the nice weather, but the month of March into April is usually just so muddy and gross around here.

I actually got the coop cleaned out and the run before the rain started, it was nice to actually be able to use a shovel and not an ice pick. Now I don't have to worry about a mucky flooded run in the morning, it will only be flooded with water!

Hope everyone had a nice weekend.

Opa, so sorry to hear about the tough decisions ahead for you and David; you will all be in my thoughts and prayers!
Welcome to Terrilhb! Glad you could join us!

Mamag; Ranchie; PK and Viejo! Hope all is well with all of you! PK...almost done with the wallhanging, will post a picture soon!

We are planning on going and getting our seed potatoes and most of our garden seeds tomorrow....don't know how much we will actually plant this year, but we always hope and plan; it just gets tougher each year. We cut down the size of the garden last year (although it sure didn't seem like it!) and I guess we will a little more this year. The heat seems to be bothering hubby more and more each summer and I have always been miserable on the back porch canning kitchen in the summer; but last year was the worst.

We have modified our "fencing" project due to necessity (we found out were not going to be able to handle doing all of it ourselves); we went and cut corner posts the other day and by the time we were finished loading them we were both whipped; so the project will be getting much much smaller and only for the chickens; we are scratching fencing the pond for a couple hogs...just too much! Hubby will be 73 this year and even though I'm 19 years younger-with taking care of mom we decided its just too much.

I hope everyone has had a wonderful day! Talk to you soon....Blessings, CCMH
