Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

All one need do is watch the show to realize that wouldbe a better title for inane televised drivel.

Too true, especially what everyone around me is into. Hannah Montana this, High School Musical that, oi vey.

Coffee is ready if anyone wants a cup. I keep looking out the window hoping that they coyote will show his furry face again. I bet if I were to put the 22-250 back in the gun safe it would show up again. Looked out this morning and saw two coons strolling along side the electric poultry fence. They did however, leave two of their buddies behind in the live traps I had set. Hopefully tonight they will get in the traps as well.

Put together a cyclone fence dog kennel yesterday and added it to my existing one. I place a gate section between the two so I could use it to separate birds. I put a welsummer trio in there and five 14 week old welsummer pullets. I still have to finish putting the mesh over the top and install the pull down sunshade on the side. I have a 50 range feeder in there and a 7 gallon waterer but I think I'm going to run some 2" PVC pipe with nipple waterers and vinyl tubing to a water supply outside of the runs. That will make it much easier to keep them watered.

Am I too late for a cup?! Didn't have time to stop in this morning before chores and church but a cup now might help motivate me to get out to the garden for a bit before it gets too hot.

That coyote probably heard you unlock the gun cabinet and high-tailed it outta there, Opa! I've got Premier electro-net, is that your brand or do you have something else? I really like mine alot, very versatile.

CCMH, Glad you got some rain!!

mamag, Prayers going out that you are doing well.

PK, Would love to hear one of your herding adventures...cherries, broom and frustration?.......sounds interesting!!

Thanks for the extra boost to get moving, hope you all have a great Sunday, later, Mary

Ok.

Back in the day, the three little girls were a total pain to herd. They often went into what I like to call, "The Thicket of No Return" because it's 5 foot trees with cactus and other prickly stuff. Our coops are on the edge of that. So, we stuck the broom in the thicket, which led them out, then we had a big ol' trail of cherries to lead to their coop. Repeat 5 times in one day.

Yesterday about noon momma comes in the basement door and the minute she spoke I knew something was wrong. Met her at the steps and ushered her upstairs with blood dripping everywhere from her hand; into the bathroom for a rinse and survey the damage. Butterfly bandages on the cut and some more to cover the area and got the bleeding stopped. Ok, mom what the heck did you do? Well she says..I was trying to get the label off of a can so I could take it with me when I go to STL to go shopping and the knife stuck and I shoved it to finish the label and it went into my hand. Hmmm...set her down with a glass of water and visited for a while till she got her breath and was ready to walk back to her house. Oh my, back in her kitchen was quite a mess to clean up, don't know how she got it everywhere, scared her pretty bad.

Fast forward....about 4 pm...a fly lands on her bandaged hand, she knocks the soup out of her hand trying to kill the fly; then because it hurts she rubs it hard..(??). Basement door opens again with that little voice; run down the stairs, more blood going everywhere....ok, this is more than I can fix, so off to the ER we go. Few hours later we are back home she is fixed up and I am ready to sit in comfy chair for a bit!!! What an afternoon!!!

MamaG thinking of you and hoping its going ok.

NAF, don't work too hard in the garden, its hot out there!

Opa, nice gun

Good luck when they come back, we are setting traps today for raiders that were in the garden last night getting what little there is left...grrrr...

Maybe more rain today!! Hubby plowed and disced the potato patch yesterday, gonna plant some more stuff tomorrow and hope for some more rain for a fall garden!!!

Have a blessed day everyone!

NAF, my fence is the 48" double spike from Premier1 and this is my second year of using it. I've been very happy with in.

CCMH, glad your mother is going to be okay. Sometimes don't you just love having a kid you can't yell at. Granny can't understand why she can't have a stepladder in her sewing room. She walks like a monkey and she thinks she can climb ladders to get things from the shelves she can't reach. Yeah right, that would work real well.

Opa, you are so right! I am such a bad daughter for sooo many reasons; lol. Taking away her pills, turning the breaker off to the stove, letting her drivers license expire and not telling her, taking her step stool out of her sewing room, forcing her to buy an iron that shuts off automatically (never will be as good as the 50 year old one of course) and on, and on!! We are kindred spirits in this department you and I!!

It's a ungodly hour to be drinking coffee but since I'm wide awake I might as well get my day started. Yesterday I caught two coons in the live traps and I just came in from checking and I've caught another one today. It's good to start the day on a positive note.

The young guy across the street had asked me to go fishing with him yesterday, but since my brother was bringing Granny home I felt I should decline. I had a nice visit with my brother and managed to get some more accomplished on the run addition. Moved some birds around and got all the young birds intergrated with the flocks. My 3 or 4 hen plan now has evolved to maintaining two separate large fowl flocks. My rainbow flock with no rooster is up to 24 and then the welsummer flock is a rooster and 7 hens. The bantams are divided into 3 separate coops.

While I didn't go fishing, I still will be having fresh fish for supper tonight. They limited out on some decent sized walleye and he came over last night with close to 3 pounds of fillets. I called David and told him that I would give him half so they could plan their supper for tonight.

PK, Thanks for the smile first thing in the morning. I pictured a princess, complete with long gown and tiara, with a broom and a bowl of cherries trying to lure the chicks from "The Thicket of No Return"! I'm sure by the fifth go around it wasn't humorous though!

When you show up with the bowl of cherries now, I bet they come running don't they? Sometimes they are quite the pain but ya gotta love them!

Thoughts and prayers to those of you who are caretakers of aging parents/other loved ones. You do an invaluable job in taking on the responsibility and I, for one, admire all your efforts. I know your loved ones appreciate all you do for them (even if they may not always say so).

I'm reading and learning as my turn for this may one day come.
Glad Granny got home safely, Opa, and that your Mom's hand will be okay, CCMH.

Got a call yesterday from DS#2. He, DDIL and grandkids were heading home from the weekend in the Wisconsin Dells and asked us to meet them by I-39 (15-20 min away) for a quick visit and bite to eat. We had a short but very nice visit.......and I just have to say that we have the cutest grandkids!! Also, DD #4 and husband are expecting Aug 26. She called to say she had been feeling a bit nauseous this week after a hiking outing the weekend before. Please have a positive thought or say a quick prayer that this isn't a problem. Thanks.

Later, Mary
