Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

AHHH, Opa my friend, you are wise beyond your years. With weather conditions like that, The wise hunter knows that the deer will be sitting by the fireplace, and not out where you can harvest them. It IS best to wait for more auspicious weather...

Good plan holding off on the hunting Opa, has it improved at all? I wouldn't call that wimping out, I'd call it a remarkable display of good sense!

We have steady drizzle and temps in the forties right now, but the northeast wind is expected later and it will chill us again. I have plenty of outdoor chores but once again they will have to wait. Need to get the packing crate coop done asap, because these 9 indoor chicks are getting BIG!

We are having highs between 65 and 70... Our lows are in the low 30's, but not quite to freezing yet.

They say this is one of their mildest winters yet. Of course, that is still cold to me, since I came from the central desert area in Arizona.

My cookie-tin heater keeps the 3 gallon waterer very warm, so it may work well during colder weather, if it ever comes. ( 8" cookie-tin, 25 watt bulb, 3 gallon metal waterer, 35/45 thermocube ). It would probably work for a 5 gallon waterer, but I don't know for sure. I've only checked it at 34 degrees when it came on a couple of times so far.

to everyone...........have a great day..........later, Mary

Good day all,

Not too bad here, 40s - 50s during the day and 20s at night. Blazing through the firewood every night, I'm going to need at least 2 more loads at this rate! The chimney is 110 years old or so, and not very efficient. I'd love to get a stove but they're pretty expensive right now. Need to wait until the spring sales!

The little columbian bantam Cochin, JarJar, is 7 weeks old now. His pitiful attempts at crowing have me in stitches most mornings. He is really squeaky and I am convinced that a little WD-40 will take care of that!

Lots of cooking to be done again today! Chain myself to the stove. DH is traveling again this week and I want to send plenty of food with him, since the company no longer pays a per diem for food. He's as tight fisted as I and won't eat out every meal. His hotel room has a microwave and fridge so he'll be a happy camper.
Bless him, he makes sure there's plenty of wood in the house so I don't have to haul it while he's gone.

And it's marmalade week! Dad sends a case of oranges from FL every year and in the past I have make yummy marmalade for him and us. Time to get busy on it again.

Loco, I've never used a water warmer, but I've busted out a lot of ice! Poor ducks were pecking at and walking on their pool last week. They were pretty funny, looked very perplexed. Waddling around, giving it the suspicious one-eyed stare.

Mary, stay warm up there! I saw the same news, what a nightmare. I gave up traveling around the holidays for that very reason. I was flying from Texas to Virginia once - and somehow ended up stuck for a night.... in Chicago!

Opa, hope you're busy stocking the freezers and the smoker!

Hiya Highlander!

Ranchie, I spent many a day busting out the ice on water troughs for the cattle and horses. As I got older, I also got lazier, and figured there had to be an easier way. There was, and I used it every time I could. We put solar powered heaters on the troughs. It didn't warm them up much, but it was enough to keep the ice off, ( remember, I was in the desert). I have used that same principle ever since. I don't have to break ice on the chickens water, the dogs water, or the water for the donkey, even though it is colder here than back where I came from...( I'm still in what's called the high desert.)

Mary, I feel for you and Highlander with your temperatures, but remember the nice spring times you have. I would not even be able to go out the door if I lived in that kind of weather. I would be bundled up so big, I couldn't fit through the door. I spent one winter in Wyoming, and almost froze to death. Never again. I'm a desert rat at heart, and will probably always be so..

Merry Christmas to all my Christian friends, and Happy Holidays to all my other friends.....

Hello everyone
Opa I do not blame you at all for not going out in single digits. It was really cold out here, but now it is warming up into the 20's the past couple of days, currently 27 right now so I wont complain.
Sometimes I wish I was rich and could buy a winter home somewhere warm and spend spring summer and fall and a little bit of winter here. I love the seasons, but winter is just one month too long for my taste.

I have been very down in the dumps since my mother passed, but I am taking it one day at a time. They say it takes about six months until you start to feel better, and I think it may be true. It was just six months on Saturday, and I feel like the worst has passed. All I can say is thank God for my kids, because they keep me so busy and make me laugh. I also have 3 sisters and a husband to support me. I feel for people who go through this and don't have a support system, that must be horribly lonely.

Christmas will be low key with a lot of reminiscing about Mom and Dad and the old days, but we will keep it upbeat for the children.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone.
