Opa's place -Where an old rooster visits with friends

Geo-caching? Travel bugs? I'm lost.

I started a new job on Monday and I am finding it's taking up a lot more of my time than I anticipated. Luckily it's an at-home job so I can still be here for the kids but in a way that makes it even more difficult as I can't switch off when I "come home". I'm glad to be working again though, the bank account is too.

Thistle, geocaching is a pastime in which objects are hidden at secret locations for participants to find using GPS positions posted on the Internet

Cold weather seems to call for a hearty soup cooked all day. With single digit temperatures today I thought it would be a good choice for supper. I got out a couple of quart jars of tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, and okra that I had canned last fall. Took a venison loin from the freezer and cut it into small cubes. Melted a little bacon grease in an iron skillet and seared the meat. The smell of milk breath venison frying in a skillet automatically turns on your taste buds. Put all the fixings in a slow cooker and the aroma filled the house with anticipation.

Supper on the table with crackers and slices of cheddar cheese, how could it get much better. First spoonful goes into my mouth and I have to sort of roll it around as I grab for a glass of ice tea. Can't believe how hot that stuff was. Finally cools enough to not burn the hide off and I kick into serious eatin' mode. Tastes just a good as I'd expected it to when suddenly I get what feels like a bone. A fish bone. Now how it that get in the soup. I look and both Granny and Hope are spitting out bones as well. What the heck.

A couple of reluctant mouthfuls later I figure out what it is. The knifes in my house are just too sharp. When I cut up the okra last fall, I thought it might be too big, but since it cut so easy I figured it was okay. However, once it cooked the spines hardened and it was like wood. The soup tasted incredible and fortunately the okra was just a small percentage of the soup. So we could eat it, but we just had to keep spitting out splinters.

Sounds delicious, albeit somewhat harmful to your teeth!

Hey Opa, are you doing Script Frenzy?

Just googled it and it says it's for "young" writers. Sprite, do you have any idea of how long it's been since I was young? Thistle, you don't need to answer that.

It is so cold out today that the kids and I had to bundle up like it was February not the end of March when we went outside to play. Oh well, hopefully the weather will change soon, I mean it is spring after all. I lit a fire in the chimnea, but it really didn't help because it was way too windy. I think instead of playing outside tomorrow maybe we will go bowling or to a movie instead!

Opa the feast sounds delicious. I am making a cheese lasagna and chicken soup for dinner tonight. Something that will stick to the ribs and warm us all up.

Still cold. 18 degrees and not supposed to go above freezing. Wonder why winter seems to last longer? The older I become the less appeal winter holds for me. I used to really enjoy it. Skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, snowmobiling, rabbit hunting. Lots of activities to keep one busy. Now various old people afflictions have taken the pleasure and or the ability to participate in those endeavors. Come on spring.
