Open letter to the jerk who dumped the dog at my gate

You did the best thing anybody could have done in your situation. It is a shame that the owner was so disrespectful and tried to have others deal witht he consequences of his actions.

Just wondering did you guys actually witness the drop off?

We have strays come around our area all the time. 2 of our neighbors just recently took two of them in. If we aren't able to catch them we have local police do it with live traps. I am sorry you had to do the worst thing, we have been so close to thinking about it a few times since they were after our chickens/ducks and even our pigs! But instead got the police out and haven't had a problem catching any yet

:

We have Two local pounds that are no kill and they will bring them there in our request and usually ill call and set it up! I am happy to report all 20 stray dogs in the past 3 years have beenn adopted!
Know its not a lot but it makes me feel good.

Oh and trust me many of them were nasty and ugly! We actually adopted one ourselfs 4 years ago he was a lab mix of some type he actually killed one of my chickens when out here....he sure has changed 100% he's a all licks and cuddles and watches over our animals all day while were gone. He never runs away, never barks at strangers, he's just a dime a dozen for a dog that was starved when he found us!

if you have so many of these strays maybe its time to keep good standing with your local police, ours know us so well its great! And last christmas one of the cops adopted one he himself caught!

I totally understand you had to do what was best sorry it had to end that way!

No, never witnessed it. Normally they won't drop off where they can be seen.

If your local animal control will help, great for you. But out here, we have to fend for ourselves. Some neighbors have cattle with baby calves so they are really concerned about dogs getting dropped off, but even they usually check for tags or identification and don't shoot until there is a problem. It's not like we are all trigger happy. He feels as bad as I do when he has to manage a problem caused by an irresponsible pet owner, but you do what you have to do.

No, we did not witness the drop off or it would have never happened. But it's pretty easy to tell the difference between a dog who was dumped and one who just wandered into the area. The drop-off's just stay in one place, waiting. The strays wander around the neighborhood, hanging out with whoever feeds them. This dog was not wandering at all, except around the driveway area and down into my yard.

Calling the police to handle this won't work. Around here, we are lucky to get police to respond to actual problems, much less a stray dog. When our house was broken in to years ago, we were at the beach 3 hours away. Our house sitter callled the police first, then us. And we got there an hour before the police got there. We are kind of on our own out here in the country. Animal control is so understaffed that if they did have a trap available, it would have taken a week or more to have it dropped off here. I could not risk the lives of my livestock for that length of time waiting on animal control to show up. The local animal shelter is overcrowded and is a kill shelter so she would not have much of a chance there anyway. Believe me....if there was an option, I would have taken it. If I had an empty kennel and could have caught the dog I would have. My kennel has sheep in it and the dog was too mean to catch anyway.

We don't have "animal control" the nearest town to us is 30 mintues away the nearest shelter for animals is an hour drive. We own 100 acres and live in the middle of know where also. We have such an issue with stray/dropped of dogs at our place

The cops we know our from the closest town which only has a population of 1200! I guess it helps we are friends with the sherif that its never been a problem. They usually will leave a live trap at our place if they don't need it at that time and we use that.

I guess we have just been lucky with this.

And I am in know way disregarding what you had to do... we would do it also!

We think they come to our place so much because of all the shelters we have (we run a large boarding stable). We run into a lot of them during the winter, it sure is scary walking into the barn to find a random huge dog laying in one of the stalls freaks me out everytime (since you don't know what they will do!)

I personally have never had to shoot a dog, don't think I ever could, no matter how mean,

however my dad has, several years ago, this large dog, looked like shepherd mix of some sort showed up on my dads land, nicest dog in the world at first, would come up and lick us, wag it's tail, greet who-ever came by, just like it lived there!, but no matter what, my dad NEVER fed it, yet it stayed mostly during the day and at night, who knows, it was in good shape for about 3 weeks, until finally started getting skinnier and skinnier, and finally my dad relented, and tossed the dog a hot-dog off of the grill, which it gobbled up.

After that, for who-knows what reason, the dog started getting meaner, and meaner, it started growling, when you came out, it would bark, and run off if you got near it.

then suddenly one day out of the blue, it attacked one of my dad's friends, knocked him to the ground, and tore up his face and arms so badly that his nose has a chunk missing from it.

my dad shot the dog right on-top of his friend (he carried a hand-gun), he said the dog never cried out, just snarled like something that sounded like pure hatred.

sounds like rabies right?, the dog tested negitve.

I understand that you had to do what you did, I find that there is no room for agressive dogs, especially one who has had an owner, a truely wild/feral dog would never allow itself to be so close to humans, just like truely feral cats.

We have people dumping their unwanted pets off out by us too. We have a county animal control, but getting them out to do anything (especially with all the many budget cuts) is next to impossible! Some people are under the mistaken impression that us country-folk need another dog or "barn" cat - usually when these animals are dumped, they're pregnant or just plain unhealthy and need lots of attention.

What these irresponsible pet owners don't realize is that we have enough of our own problems and don't need theirs thrown into the mix.

We can't afford another vet bill on top of the one's we've already chosen to be responsible for. We have a budget we need to live within too and don't need another mouth to feed. We only have just so many friends we can pawn these strays off on and then we start running out of friends!

Had they been responsible owners to begin with? They're dog/cat wouldn't have been pregnant - probably for the umpteenth time since they took possession of it! - it would have been spayed or neutered.

Had they been responsible owners? They'd have taken the time to find a new home for their own animal instead of dumping it out in the middle of nowhere and ASSuming that total strangers would be willing to take full responsibility for it. Barring finding a proper home, they could've taken it to the shelter for a surrender. Yes, it might've cost them a bit of money to do it and, yes, it may have been put (humanely!) to sleep when the shelter couldn't find it a home, but it's much better than letting their animal remain terrified, unwanted, unloved, starving and becoming a farmers worst nightmare that kills their livelihood!!

UGH!!!! Irresponsible pet owners just make me

how sad you had to go thru this.this i why am getting LGD.they can either chase off things that don't belong on our property or kill it.i know you will be happy when you shepards mature.

post it on craigslist.the owner of the dog is probably looking for a "new" puppy.like someone else said, your rant was very direct and it may also make others think before they do something like this.

I sure would send the letter to the local paper. I'd have shot the dog too. Too many shelters and foster homes are overflowing to bother with badly behaved dogs, no matter what the reason...there are thousands more deserving animals out there waiting to be adopted before they have to be put down to be messing with someone's else's bad-tempered throwaway and wasting valubale resources. Not to mention the risk to you and yours in the meantime.
