Can't a person inject a small amount of food coloring or something similar into the outer layer of breast meat or the skin layer somewhere to mark them right before processing?

When my husband has killed deer and elk in the past and had it processed we have always wondered if we were getting the meat from our animal back or not. I know I would be even more worried about that with meat birds I had raised.

I am with you a hundred percent, in fact my door is wide open-slip me some homegrown chicken on my plate....PLEASE!!!!

Do you get the feet back still attached to the chickens? you could use the toe punch. I'm sure it causes some pain, but they get over it quickly. Many breeders use it to mark their birds at hatching so they can keep track of parentage, etc. you can buy a little punch and punch the web between the toes. But that will only work if you get the carcass back with the feet on. Maybe you could punch a place on the wing. I know it wouldn't hurt near as much as pinioning them.

Then you aren't paying very close attention. The mods deleted such a post just yesterday, and that was here in the meat bird section where you would think people would know better.

Not everyone is as ignorant as the folks discussed in this thread, but there are plenty of them all the same. And contrary to popular belief, it runs the gamut of the political spectrum. Most of them are meat eaters and aren't even part of The-Group-That-Must-Not-Be-Named.

No one group or political philosophy has the corner on stupid.

Maybe if you go around bragging about it, or talking about it in the wrong place (public high school, learned that one quick) but then its your own fault.

I can't imagine anyone bragging about killing chickens...its actually quite a chore and nothing to really brag about. As for talking about it in the wrong place? The only place I could imagine would the wrong forum for talking about procuring food is maybe during a church service or any other place where your attention should be placed elsewhere.

Most conversations of this kind are held in casual conversations....I can't imagine why a high school would be inappropriate? Do high school children not eat chicken? Is there some sexual, racial or otherwise negative overtones to discussing processing animals?

Our high school has its own processing room....where in the world would be more appropriate than a high school that actually processes animals and teaches the children to do so?

I don't announce to all and sundry that I kill my chickens....when asked, I talk freely about it. When asked questions such as, "What are you doing this weekend and can you help us with this or that?" I will freely state that I am processing chickens this weekend. Nothing dirty, nothing to be ashamed of, nothing to hide there. I don't call that "bragging", do you?

Processing my own animals is very much a part of my heritage and something I don't intend to make excuses for to people who feel they are too delicate to hear that animals die for food. I'm sorry if that sounds defensive to you, but where I work I do have to defend this decision. Maybe where you live its not the case....more power to you and I wish there were more people with strength and wisdom like that on this planet.

MEAT IS MURDER!!!! (Tasty, tasty, murder.) hehe

I loved reading this thread. I am new to chickens. We bought our first ones this year, the day before Easter - when everyone was getting chicks. I got all kinds of looks from people when I started asking the feed store guy which chicks were dual purpose. I was amazed at the gasps.

My children have named all our birds and I tell them frequently that we are going to eat Roxie, Twilla, Chester, etc. eventually. I only got a few to start with but I am definently going to get more. And I look forward to the day when I can kill and eat my own. I am a little nervous about doing the first one but after that, I will be fine. I love the thought of being self susstaining. Maybe there are meaties, a goat ,or cow, or pig in the future....but first I have to get all my ladies laying (only 2 of 7 so far!)
