Open mouth??

Toula,
I'm so sorry you've had to go thru all that!! My gosh how awful!! Why in the world would they outlaw backyard chickens?? Oooooh that upsets me SO!! Though I only have my two girls, I love them to death and would go crazy if I had to suddenly get rid of them.. esp not knowing their true fate once they'd been given away!! I mean, I'm sorry, but I don't trust anyone.. how could I know if they killed and ate my chickens?? I just couldn't take it. Oh you poor thing!! My heart aches for you!! I certainly wish you the very best with the chickens you still have and hope the EE does better!! Your coops are just beautiful!! Great job!!

I know your concern about the fate of my hens. I think I did a good job. I receive pics from their new homes, and it all seems to be working well. Some are just starting out, and are truly excited. A lot have little kids who then renamed them the cutest names. (Snow White and Luke Skywalker for the white silkies) All my rehomed hens are all great egg layers, mostly an egg a day. I think they will be loved as pets. Take care, Marty

That's great news!! I never doubted for a second that you'd placed them in great homes and I'm so glad you were able to do just that!! I know sometimes that can be a difficult task!! Best of luck to you with your remaining ones!!

Well it's a sad day for me today. My beloved Easter Egger Merle died last night. Remember I posted a week ago about the open mouth, not gasping for air or any other symptoms. She had even laid her final egg the day before. Yesterday before I left at 11:00 AM she was in a nesting box but when I came back around 3:00 PM she was still there and no egg. I took her out to allow her to graze on the lawn and threw a little scratch down, usually a treat, but no interest. So I separated her and took her in the house and fixed her up in the dog crate. This morning it was all over. Until the listlessness yesterday and the open mouth last week no other symptoms. I even thought she might have been depressed since all her other coopmates left for other homes. We only kept her because she was the favorite. I just don't know what happened to her. Marty

Oooooh dear God I'm so sorry. Oooooh my I just don't even know what to say. I'm actually feeling your pain and am about to cry. I feel so bad for you. God bless you honey. I wonder what could have happened to her. Are you having a necropsy done?? I do believe they're free in most states and it would be good to know what she had if not at least to maybe help save other chickens. Will you be getting anymore chickens?? Was she the ONLY chicken you kept though, cause chickens ARE flock animals and don't thrive well alone. Though goodness I just can't imagine her dying of depression unless of course if she'd stopped eating for days maybe?? I just don't know what to say other than I'm so so very sorry. May Merle RIP, the sweet girl. My condolences to you.
