Open wound and maggots! What do I do?!?

I was very lucky to save Chicken Matthews and could only do so by having her wing amputated. That would have been impossible in your situation.

Thanks y'all... it's been a rough night, I haven't slept... I guess I need to suck it up and realize that's farm life... but it hurts a lot

Yes, I know, wolfpacker, and knowing it wasn't anything that could be amputated and hopefully cured in that way, I knew I had to put him down... I know it was the right thing to do... but that doesn't make it hurt any less...

You should be proud of how you've handled yourself. It takes quite a person to put the needs of the animal before their fears and angst.

You were much bigger than your BF in my eyes....
"he knew the tom wouldn't make it, but he didn't want to do it"......shame on him!

We all live and learn...and some things are harder on us than others.

Best Wishes to you
Sandra

FarmGirlNE,

I'm so sorry! You did everything you could, and then you did what you had to. I'm also so sorry you didn't get the help and support you should have.

SandraChick is right. You should be proud of how you handled it! I know it hurts, but you've got what it takes.

Update...
When maggots run out of dead tissue to eat, they do infact start feeding on good healthy tissue. This also releases an enzyme from maggot that is toxic to animals making the animal lethargic and septic. 1st- Must kill all the maggots with hydrogen peroxide. 2nd- remove all maggot carcasses. 3rd-
Clean wound with iodine. Must repeat 2x day to make sure all maggots are gone and wound is healing properly.
