Opening eggs

looking good!!! wait a few hours and watch for progression!!! sheesh I feel like Im hatching a baby now Im stressing LOL...

Me too! Stressing! I can see it breathing, but it doesn't seem like it's able to move except it's beak in that small area..... I think I know what shrink wrapped means now.... I just chipped away some that I could see the outer skin had pulled away from the egg, but the baby is most definitely shrink wrapped. Argh....

dip your finger in warm water and apply it to the membrane surrounding the chick-not too much but enough to keep it moist...leave it at this point-I edited my previous advice so as not to upset anyone-let it hatch out it self....it should be ok by this point to finish hatching all my itself

dip your finger in warm water and apply it to the membrane surrounding the chick-ot too much but enough to keep it wet-if it were me I would chip away a little more to check and see if the yolk has been absorbed...if it has I would hatch it out in my hand-I put a wet warm washclothe in my hand use tweezers and pick the shell away with the membrane too-I had to hatch out my duck that way and many chicks! watch out for blood though-stop and give it a rest if you see that-

There are many on BYC that disagree with this advice and follow the "Too weak to hatch, Too weak to survive" mantra.

Good luck with the hatch, hopefully the chicks will thrive for you.

I realize what others would say and I stated that in my very first post-Im just helping through the rest-it was all in my opinion only-that is only what I would do in certain circumstances-

I wet it and peeled a little back, but I am going to give it a chance to soak in a little.

I wish I'd not opened the bator to fill the water resevoir, that there had been another answer....I will not be hatching in the heated/dry house again. I'll wait until the humidity returns to GA.

Thanks Jim! I hear you. I can understand, but I feel as if I caused the issue, and I've found that in the past when I was an assistant and would save foals that should not have lived? Their fate is sealed not long after no matter what you do. Death was only made to wait a little longer. So....I do see what you mean, but I think these things work themselves out. My best mare had a foal stuck in her - lodged his left foreleg just behind her pelvic bone, it was not a matter of anything other than the way she laid down to have him. Feeling that, I got her up and she laid back down to give birth completely normally. So, I think the more you know, the better. I'd have lost a very expensive investment - emotional as well as financial - for a very simple reason had I not interfered.

I would think it would depend on circumstance and I do think everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I am, I don't think he's even trying though. Or she....whichever.

He's peaking out and peeping.

That is too much blood, the egg is probably a slow to develop chick and isn't ready to come out yet. Half a degree too low for 21 days can slow them down by a day or more. I suggest reading the sticky at the top of this section. Links discuss helping vs not and what to do if you decide to help.
