Operation: Get 'er done, already!

So I started a new discussion yesterday and ended up blabbering on and on about my brand new miter saw.

When I learned someone else is getting a table saw for Christmas, I figured I'd best wrap up the Christmas gift discussion (hehehe ... wrap up!) and get on over here where I can do some proper Women with Tools chatter.

That other upright species is welcome, too!

Do not be humble. Throw it all out there. I'd love to know about projects you've done around your house or property, things you've made, and the tools you've acquired.

And if you have a stuck project and would welcome some brainstorming or a motivational shove, post here and let's see if we can help you get it done.

The greenhouse you're building with the table saw: Do you basically build a frame and then cover the entire structure in some kind of plastic material? Does it get built directly on top of the ground, or will you need to build a foundation? How many square feet?

I am planning a concrete block foundation on concrete base, not the whole floor. Just around the perimeter. I was thinking 12x16. I plan to build a wooden frame to hold recycled storm windows.

It's not on the books for financial reasons just yet, but I love the idea of building a greenhouse. The square footage sounds perfect.

I have pretty much wanted one since i was a teenager! And i am quite a bit past over the hill. I am interested in growing my own veggie plants to put in my raised beds and also flowers. I would also like to raise a lot of greens for the animals!

I'm currently working on securing the chicken run and installing windows on the east side of the coop. I'm expanding the roof in the spring with an extension so the chickens will have a rainproof outdoor space.

Additional projects for the New Year:

Kitchen island or farmhouse table (leaning toward a table)
Lodgepole pine couch or a design similar to the kitchen table
Matching chair
Adirdonack chairs for the deck
Firewood box for kindling (back deck)
Firewood platform for logs

We currently have almost no furniture, but I do have a nice writing desk. I converted an oak dining room table to a lowered Japanese style rustic floor desk. I love sitting on the floor. I justify rustic as follows:

"Rustic is the perfect excuse for not being perfect."

I should copyright that quote. Hehehe.

You know how dining room tables look as if they're made from one continuous piece of wood? No seams or visible slats? When you buy an old table from a Craigslist listing and discover it's too big for your kitchen, and then you shove it outside in the rain and sun for a year, you get lots and lots of warping — and that seamless look is ruined.

Individual slats revealed themselves as the boards warped and split apart. When I was prepping the table for the burn pile (shameful, I know), I snapped some of the boards off and put them side by side on the ground, and suddenly the makings for a beautiful table top emerged. I salved the legs and some end boards and created a nice desk.

Getting the legs on straight was absolutely maddening. I had few tools, not much hand strength and little experience. But crooked legs are rustic, and Pinterest says rustic is good!!

I painted the frame black and then rubbed in a wax, my favorite surface treatment. And I made a homemade stain for the top to darken the oak and waxed it when I was done.

And the dogs love my desk as much as I do. They can comfortably sleep underneath. My Queensland Heeler, chocolate lab mix is half way under there and half on my legs right now.

Sounds like some good projects. I want to make an entryway table. Those wood bins and such will be useful here too. I want to make some rustic benches for around our property when i get tired walking or just want to sit and watch. And maybe a couple more feeders for the chickens and guineas.
