thats a problem, no feed store here has them. At least not until after Easter.

I don't know what else to do, I will try to turn the light off at night depending on the temps and see if it still breaths heavy in a couple of days.

Now the only problem I am gonna have is the new shipment isn't coming until April 12, this chick will almost be a month old. Will the older one be ok with the babies?

TIA

I'm sorry.... Personally.... I wouldn't leave it alone. Will it be fine by itself, yes.

Just keep an eye on it and see what it does, however one chick should be just fine with a bunch of layers. It will soon be the biggest one in the brooder, but do watch and see how it reacts over the next couple of weeks.

The biggest thing to look for is labored breathing. Basically what your looking for is the whole body to move when it breathes. If it ever has it's mouth open while breathing, you definitely need to move it by itself.

One thing you can do, depending on your schedule is to keep the CX chick in with the layers for 12 hours and then just isolate it in the same brooder for 12 hours. Some how make something out of wire to separate the chick from the feeder, but still have access to it's brooder mates.

I think it's a win win either way... you can either take it out or leave it in. Just keep your eyes on it for any sudden changes in breathing.

Good luck....

Definitely do not put them together, especially with that big of an age difference. That's tough that only one made it and the rest died. I've never heard of blood in the eyes, which makes me believe something to do with pressure on the planes. I'm not sure but that was the first thing that came to my mind. I have had thousands of birds shipped and never seen any with blood in their eyes. Did Martis have a clue to with what was wrong?

Martis didn't know, I was thinking someone dropped the box or something. their heads were even swelled and I am assuming it was blood, in the eye was like a brown red, some it was both eyes and some just one. The only way I can explain their heads is they almost looked down syndrome. then some of the layers their necks would go backwards. One I tried making a cast but it didn't work.

I am not really experienced with chickens I am going on my 3 year, and this was the first time I ever ordered so I was so scared I didn't know what to do. I have gotten them in the store, or I hatched my own and never had any problems.

Thanks for your help I really appreciate it. I don't know what I would do without you guys!

That is a really bad experience, honestly I really wouldn't know what to do with it either. I would have called the hatchery just as you did, very odd. Hopefully your next shipment will be better.

Don't ever be afraid to call a hatchery if you have a problem, or multiple birds die. Even big hatcheries like McMurray will often help you out. One time I called after several birds died, and they gave me a credit for the next order. Better than nothing!

I guess I'm not understanding . I've raised white X's for quite awhile , and have always kept them with my layers until butcher time . I've had only a handful die before butchering . Seems odd to me that the chick is so big now . My advice would be to just keep it with the other chickies . You're planning on butchering it anyway , so if it does end up dying , then it's not as big of a loss as losing all of the others the same night . You really should be able to leave feed out for them though.....I do all of my own butchering , and haven't seen a difference between free feeding and scheduled feeding....maybe I'm just lucky .
