Good plan, but not for the original birds. Need to keep them unmixed so that you can go back to the originals to correct a problem or start over if you need to.

I've read that for the most successful clan breeding your offspring that you keep would go back into the flock of their mother. Is this a questionable approach.

I've never clan bred so I can't say from personal experience. I line breed mostly myself and add unrelated roosters once in a while. I raise over 20 different breeds and/or colors so I just don't have the space to clan breed.
