Went to a swap today, wanting a baby turkey to keep the single baby turkey I hatched company. Didn't find one, but I did find a peachick that was young enough to keep it company anyway. Long story short- in listening to the guy talk about his cage of blue chicks (and I'm almost 100% positive they were blues, with 2 pieds and 1 split white, and one odd looking baby that I picked out to take home), he was saying he had all these colors (270 of them, he said *pokerface*) and he even had javas.

And then I'm looking at this chick I had just bought from him (I'd stuck around to listen to him talk to this other person thinking I could learn something of the background...) and wondering.

Well, my luck, it'll be a boy, too.

I do feel badly for the poor thing though. I'm pretty sure she's got some kind of respiratory (or worms) thing going on. She scraped her face raw and bloody against the cage she was in when I got her. Her beak was crusted with... I don't even want to know what (food? I don't know), but it took some very angry minutes to scrape it clean enough that she could even close it. She was thirsty enough to drink out of a water bottle lid I held out to her even though she was scared. Since I got her home she's done nothing but stuff her face until her crop sticks out (and she's a skinny little thing, her knees jut up and out between her wings and body in a gross way when she lays down), drink, and sleep under the heat lamp like it's going out of style. The turkey is COMPLETELY jealous this bird is EATING ALL MY FOOD MOM. We'll see if this chick even makes it for the next few days!
