My sister in law just sent me this exchange she had with someone selling lavender orpington chicks on craigslist. She is racking her brain trying to figure out what she did to irritate this person & if she was actually out of line. I know what I think about it but am curious to see if she & I are both nuts or if you feel the same? What do you think?
A little back story, I am just getting started with chickens but she has kept & bred them for years. From my perspective, she is very well versed in the whole breeding, buying & selling. We had talked about getting some less common breeds, splitting them between us & living happily ever after in fancy chicken land. Here's what she sent me this morning.........

Morning!
Hope you've had your coffee! I need to borrow your brain & hear what you think about this. So I responded to an ad ready to run out the door to pick up fancy lavender orpington chicks. They're one of the ones we talked about last week (the big poofy grayish/blueish/lavenderish looking ones). Call me after your read & let me know what you think. Am I off my rocker?
Here is the ad in its entirety that I responded to:
7 Lavender Orpington chicks - $8 (Thurston Co)
10 day old Lavender chicks
I'm in Thurston County willing to meet you some wheres
nice kids well started from really good breed'n stock

Hi there!
I am interested in your chicks if they are still available! My schedule is flexible & I would be coming from the Puyallup area.
Hoping to hear from you soon! Thanks!

Hi
Yea I still have those chicks but they're about 3 weeks old now
Got another bunch hatch'n right now if ya want them. Probably be around the same number of chicks at the same price.
That other bunch is old enough that I can tell there's only a couple pullets in there. If you buy all the day olds that are hatching now I'll pick out the girls from that older group and sell them to you for $12 ea

Oh my! Babies galore! Well I was only able to talk my husband out of $50 & had to tell him they were magic purple chickens lol
I currently have chicks that are between 9 to 12 weeks out in the coop. I will of course separate them until the orps are old enough but which do you think woods be better for my situation?
Also when/where could we meet? I'm in the Puyallup area
Thanks for getting back to me!

Please let me know if there is a good time that would work for you today! Feel free to either email, call or text me. I'm incredibly excited!

Sorry it took so long to get bk to you. lol Your kind of a pain.
I sold those Orpington chicks. They were older and i had to charge more for them. The other thing is I dont think they would have worked for you. I looked at 'em and decided there were a lot of roosters in that bunch.
So i swiped some out of someone elses pre order that just hatched.
I have 6 happy lil silver babies that are 2 days old in the brooder for you. $8 ea
I'm trying to co ordinate delivery with you and a lady that wants hatching eggs. Today or Monday I dont know which yet
So how's that ? Excited again ??

then couldnt come up with enough money to buy what was being offered (7 chicks @$8 ea)
by the time you decided to buy them they were 3 weeks old full of my feed and time and effort
then because i didnt want to charge more than you had for chicks that probably wouldnt have worked for you (mostly roosters) i kept chicks promised to someone else
and now they are living in a brooder that i will be needing cleaned and prep'd for the next batch of eggs coming out of the incubator
yea it was kind of a pain
and Thank You NO

Dear confused "chicken breeder",
How about replying when you have something for sale? How about we start with that? If those chicks were too old to be going for the price you had posted, how about either editing the ad to keep it current or replacing it altogether? You also could have simply responded & said, this group has gotten older & is worth more now but I have others coming. This isn't my first go around with chickens honey. I've bred & sold hundreds myself. The difference here is communication. I am very aware that when you have a rare breed available this time of year, you will be bombarded with inquiries & people interested. I was not over the top. I email Friday then again Saturday when I received no response. I was simply trying to make sure that I could do business with you. I didn't have my heart set on buying these specific chickens. I was content to be put on a waiting list. I was simply looking for communication from you. Nor am I incapable of simple mathematical problems. I knew what I wanted. I initially wasn't interested in buying all 7 posted. I didn't realize I had to take all of them. Had that been stated in the ad, I would have happily liberated more funds to purchase them all. As far as your implication that it took me 3 weeks to decide I wanted to buy them, you have me confused with one of your other unhappy customers. My first email to you was the 23rd, that's 3 days ago. Chicks don't age 3 weeks in 3 days. I'm terribly sorry for trying to give you money for something you had offered for sale.
Rest assured, I will do my best to remember to mention you and your business practices to all of my customers & piers.
Do not contact me again.

No worries, it will be on craigslist in a minute if you decide you would like to read it after all. Have a great day.
